I seriously recommend it. It is such a vivid view of depression. Even though Sylvia Plath was better known for her poetry, and best known for committing suicide, I found this book to be a great snapshot of what I imagine a woman's life in the 1950's would be.
I am definitely going to chose it for my book club this month. I read loads of contemporary fiction, and nothing really "spoke" to me. I read this last year when I first was dx'd with bipolarII and it struck such a chord of truth.
It's also pretty short, which makes it easier to read.

Excellent choice ma'am *grins*
My sis in law just read it and really loved it.. she's married to the brother that has suffered his whole life with depression and other mental illness.
I didn'r read it for ages. I think I had been put off it by "Prozac Nation" (and, and let me chuck "The Bell Jar" in as a link before Dr Bob nudges you to do it *l*).. don't ask me why I thought they would be similar, but I really hated Prozac Nation (except biazrrely when I was really really black *L* That was when i finally read it all the way through!).. anyway, finally read The Bell Jar and I really liked it. I found the imagary really strong in it, th colours, the "pocket books" and the like.
Can I come along to book club this month please?!

I promise to give a full report, who was wearing what and who fell asleep during the meal (as long as it isn't me...) My reading abilities are coming back to life just in time. I cannot believe the knots I put myself in trying to select a book for the group. Actually, I set a standard last year with the book and menu ("Life of Pi" with an Indian meal, natch), and the group chose it as "book of the year" so I am, like, feeling kind of under the gun here. Didn't want something too cutesy, didn't want something too long, didn't want something Top Ten....
I have become addicted to dot-dot-dots...

I'm rereading and am at the bit where they all get food poisoning from the crabmeat and mayonnaise filled avocados, perhaps I should skip that one?

Hey,
yeah, I@m OK.. just a little wobbly.. Not dealing with stess of working life too well, plus some medical issues are causing me a little.. well, distress I guess you would call it.
Also, I'm having my own little "hard to read" phase (though you'd never believe it from my posts here *l*).. I'm having to stick to childrens fantasy.. which isn't so bad really as theres some great stuff out there at the moment.
When I did my wonderful token shopping spree I picked up two books I've wanted to read for ages ("Nostradamus Ate my Hamster" and "A Tree Goes in Brooklyn") but jsut can't seem to concentrate on either on them. So popped into book shop today to cheer myself up after docs appointment, and bought two more Garth Nix books.. "Mister Monday" and "Grim Tuesday".. hopefully enough to nourish and soothe me a little with minimal concentration *LOL*Thanks for being so caring. You know the other thing that is bothering me at the moment too.. why do I find that "thing" so stupidly triggering is beyond me *L* But I think discussions on that are best kept to email ;)
