My therapist has recommended that I read author William Styron's ("Sophie's Choice") account of his own struggle with depression, titled "Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness". Has anyone here read it? Did you find it helpful?

Hi Atticus:
Yes, it is an excellent read. I do think you would find it helpful. I did.

Yes. I have read it and reread at times, as needed (it's short, so it's easy to do that). I found it very helpful for me when I was depressed.
BTW, when it first came out, I remember hearing Styron in an interview on NPR, and at the time(late 80's I think?), I think he was the first (or one of the first) celebrity writer to address his depression in a book. I remember thinking him very brave, and I've often felt very grateful to him for his book.

Excellent and moving account of a sudden bout of near-suicidal depression by a great writer. Styron also contributed a story that's in "Unholy Ghost: Writers on Depression" compiled by Nell Casey. I've mentioned it to many people and have yet to find anyone who read it - really surprising. Real stories by real people, all written eloquently by writers and poets. Very moving and enlightening. I highly recommend both books.

I just read it for the first time. My first therapist recommended it to me, but asked me not to read it at that time (I was in the throes of a terrible depression).
Now I'm strong enough to read it, and have the concentration too. I'm glad for his voice.
