I finished "Oryx and Crake" and it reaffirmed my belief that this author can turn her hand to any genre and write a compelling story. It brought to mind John Brenner's "Stand On Zanzibar", another seminal work. Also many works by Marge Piercy, who can transcend being pigeonholed as a writer. My heroines.I really love well written speculative fiction.

I've read "Cat's Eye" and "Alias Grace: a Novel". I found Cat's Eye interesting but I can't say that I liked it. But I really did like Alias Grace. I never read "The Handmaid's Tale" but I saw the film based on it. Very disturbing.

My oldest brother has met her many times and she is indeed treated like a Royal Writer or some other laureate In Canada. I first read "The Edible Woman" when I was 14 or something, and I thought (or was hoping it was) something dirty. I got to the end, and I remember thinking, "I don't think I can 'get' this yet," so I put the book aside and read it 2 years later. It touched me deeply. This author deserves all the acolades the world can heap upon her.

I LOVE Margaret Atwood. She is amazing. I can't get enough of her writing, its just wonderful.

I really liked Alias Grace and the Handmaids Tale, but I have to say that I found a couple of others that I read disappointing. I thought that she must have just gotten sick of The Blind Assassin as it just kind of petered out, and another one I read (can't remember what its called - about a hysterical woman who had long red hair) rather disappointing and cliched too. Must have a go at some of the others though, but finding it hard to get into novels at the mo.
