I've nearly finished the second book in the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.
The first book, "The Eyre Affair" was fantastic.. Its set in England, but not THIS England.. an alternate England.. An other world England. This England is bordered by the Rupublic of Wales.. Re-engineered extinct animals are kept as pets.. And the English literary classics are a huge part of life.. Thursday Next is a LiteraTec Officer, investigating happenings related to literature!!
Anyway.. Its a really fun book.. light hearted and nicely written. Full of puns connected to the classics and other things.. peoples names nearly always raise a giggle!!
The second books is "Lost in a Good Book: A Thursday Next Novel" (hmm, Amazon is being a pain with this link.. trying this this time!) and I'm enjoying it just as much as the first!!
The third is "Well of Lost Plots" and coming out here in July (its on UK Amazon, so we'll see if its on US I guess!) is "Something Rotten"Enjoying them so much!!!

Sounds great!
Hey, you ever read Orson Scott Card? If you can forgive the Mormonism -- which is probably not very apparent if you aren't familiar with Mormonism -- his series about "Alvin Maker" is a little similar, only American. Starts with "Seventh Son" and involves an alternate history, with all sorts of really cool 'talents' for people. (NB: it's not a HUGE recommendation, but since we both liked "His Dark Materials" -- I liked them.)
I'll put it on my list.

Excellent, thanks!! Will check into them.. I love getting reccomendations!!
A guy on another forum I use posted a message about "What is dark Material really, and could this be the force that people attribute to God".. My answer was "GO READ HIS DARK MATERIALS" *l*
I think a law should be passed that makes everyone read them!!!And I think I got over excited in my HUGE reccomendation thing.. cos.. HDM would be HUGE.. so Jjasper Fforde is a "kind of big, but not really totally huge" reccomendation *lol*

You know that noise you make when there's a little explosion of air that comes out your mouth along with a word that properly describes excretory products, while shaking your head? And it's not quite a laugh, but it almost is? *THAT* is what happened when I read your last post.
Man, I wish you and I had started this years ago -- think of all I've missed out on in that time?
I'll settle for the 'large but not exceptionally so' recommendation. The literary references in an alternate version of our world interest me enough to check it out. That we both liked HDM gives me added confidence that it will be worth any effort on my part to get my mitts on the books and pass my eyes over them. Is that a suitably subdued response to your recommendation?
You funny. Me like funny you.

Hi Nikki,
"The Eyre Affair" sounds great! I just ordered it from Amazon based on your recommendation (how can a fellow Neal Stephenson fan be wrong?). I love alternate reality fiction. Have you ever read Philip K. Dick's "The Man in the High Castle"? It came out in 1962, won a ton of sci-fi awards. It's about an alternate reality where the Allies lost World War II. But as trite as that sounds, it's anything but in the hands of a writer like Philip Dick. Atticus
