What books have blown you away??

Posted by NikkiT2 on May 23, 2004, at 7:03:58

So, I'm building a new list of books to buy and read.. so thought I'd start a thread of peoples favourites!!

For me there are a few.. I could never narrow down to just one books.. so I will mention my favourites and a few I have really found fantastic recently!!

"Lord of the Rings" is there.. need I say any more??!

"His Dark Materials" is a trilogy (plus a novella called "Lyra's Oxford" and 4th novel is being written at the moment!) I try and get every one to read this series. Its aimed at the kind of Harry Potter generation, but is so much more mature in its writing, language and themes.. It gave me so much to ponder and ream about!!

If you like Sci Fi, then the Cyber Punk classic "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson is a must read.. This was really the first Sci Fi book I read and I have read it SO many times now!! *g* And I sooo want to learn to fight using Samuri swords because of this book *grins*

"The Red Tent" is a book I read fairly recently, and I think that every woman should read this (Especially Dinah!! Dinah.. go buy it!).. Its a biblican story, the story of Dinah, sister to Joseph (and his technicolour dream coat), and is one of the most empowering books I have read, and I wasn't expecting it to be!

I'll probably pop up with some more.. but please, inspiration people!!! tell me your "blew me away" books please!!

Thanks for the welcome, Nikki. I was in a bookclub IRL through my boss at work. She's a dentist, I answered her phones. The rest of the club consisted of other doctors, lawyers, columnists, ummmm... Professional Women. I am sure it's my own fabulous paranoia at work, but I felt so out of my league. They would be chatting about court cases, what country to go on vacation to, where they shopped. I was OK as far as discussing a book intelligently, but the "small talk" scared me to death! I was sure I'd be found out as a pretender.

I boogied out after a year and haven't been able to go back since. That's why I am so thrilled to had found you guys.

"the prophet" by kahil gibran

i'm glad you brought this up because i've been missing this book for a number of years. looks like kk is going to the library today. i remember when i first read this book, it made me cry and i actually stole it from the library (i know, i'm horrible). i just couldn't give it back. i'm going to the library right now, for this book, "post office" by bukowski (another book i've somehow lost, and i'll pick out something by camus. perhaps "happy death"?

and why do i always read books i've read before? i still have "the tao of pooh" sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read.

What a great selection! Is it me, or do a lot of us like the same books?

Or is it just fine writing?

I'd buy one used from Amazon. Way cheaper and in good shape.

It was my personal book of the year!
