What are you writing now?

Posted by SydBarrett on November 7, 2003, at 23:31:34

I dont know if i'm the only professional author here, but i'll give this a whirl just in case i'm not.

Hello, dear friends in the wonderfull community of writers. I'm always interested in the workings of my fellows, and am curious what tangents you all are currently on. What journals are you attempting to enter your work into? Got a novel you're marketing? What contests this year have you submitted work to?

Right now i'm working on the first draft of a ms. for my newest poetry chapbook, A quiet look at Canada.

Should be done by the end of 04 seeing as i also am working on another novel, though i do wish to remain annoymous about it.

I'm not a professional writer, but i write...

poetry (a couple were published _eons_ ago, and some of my work has been used as lyrics by musician friends... i've also read at a few poetry readings),

books (a few- each of different genre. never attempted publishing. i've been dabbling, really, mostly for my own enjoyment or sanity...)

Still interested?
I'm interested in what you are writing, definitely.
One of mine that you may be interested in, is 'about' creative genius. Title is "When They Walk, They Dance".

And you?

Escher

Well, my poetry probably my strongest value, they have a definent Syd Barrett/Jim Morrison (hence the name, as me and Syd have so many similarities) quality.

My novels are often very avant garde, and dark. I try to channel myself into anything i write.

hello
i'm a technical writer, so i'm professional, but it's not necessarily interesting.

today i wrote a troubleshooting guide for a piece of software.

over the last week i wrote some articles on office policy and procedure.

the week before i wrote a user's guide.

oh yes, and i shan't forget the training course.

when i get home i'm so tired from writing i just can't use the shift key :p

Technical writing is a good scene nowadays, but from what my cohorts who are involved in said form have told me, it sounds like they work you untill you are burnt out, then replace you. Sounds like a waste to me, but I understand the money is good in that area right now.

my experience has varied from those of your cohorts.

the money is solidly middle class. it's good compared to most jobs, but not as good as the money that some of my other friends are making in other fields with the same number of years out of school and similar degrees. (i have a technical degree).

i definitely have not been overworked. i can count on the fingers on one hand the number of times i have worked over 40 hours in a week in the last year. this is definitely a function of my working conditions.

i have never reported to management that truly understood my job, so i can do my own estimates and set my own schedule. i have relatively few deadlines, i can generally get to things when i get to them, and i can say "i don't have time to do that" when people ask me for stuff. plus, with no editor, i can turn in what i consider sub-par work, and it's perfectly acceptable to my (very small) audience (composed entirely of non-writers). my editing/revising/review process is practically non-existant (except in rare cases).

the management thinks that i'm brilliant (because work is being done), and there is no talk of replacement. (i did get axed in mass layoffs, though)

from what i can figure, my experience is atypical.
