I've just finished "The Secret History, Donna Tart" (too many options for it without author name!).. Its kind of a thriller, and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as thats not a genre I read alot of.. but I ended up really enjoying it. Also, in the opening chapter, it gives away the main part of the plot, so I though that I would simply not get into it knowing what was coming. But it actually worked to increase the suspense, as you're always waiting for it to happen!!
I'm now starting "The House of Blue Mangos" by David Davidar. I'm only onto chatper 3, but its looking good so far!! I spent ages in the book shop yesterday looking for a book to read. I;m pretty hard up this month, so wanted a nice chunky book that will last.. I was so dissapointed by how short most of the books are at the moment. This was the only one that caught my eye, so any reccomendations for a nice chunky book would be highly appreciated!!

I just finished HST's "Kingdom of Fear". I will be starting on Joseph Heller's "Catch as Catch Can" short story compilation (mostly from the '40's). After that a Robbin's book.

I'm reading "Wintering A Novel of Sylvia Plath". It's really good. At first I didn't want to read it because I don't always like to have other people trying to build on somebody else's work. (I had the same objections to "The Hours" which I also ended up liking.) But it turns out I really like it. It's based on Sylvia Plath's last months in England. The chapters are named after the poems in her last book following the arrangment she made rather than the one Ted Hughes made after her death. The book is not kind to Ted! I think the author must have read Sylvia P in a women's lit class taught by one of those hairy legged womyn of the 70's. What I love about the book is the weather and the countryside, I want Sylvia's house in Devonshire! But it's also a very believable portrait of a young mother alone with two sick babies in a house with no telephone in the middle of winter.
I was never a big fan of Plath's poetry (I've heard Lady Lazarus quoted by too many moody adolescents) but Wintering was always a favorite of mine.

Probably shouldn't admit this, but I'm reading "Justice" by Dominick Dunne (by cracky I remembered the double double quotes, maybe I'm not completely senile after all). I consider true crime to be light reading...I'm also one of those Court TV addicts. Almost never read fiction, real life is much more interesting.
I'm also reading "Surviving Manic Depression" (I always read at least two books at the same time) by E. Fuller Torrey MD. It's not fun reading but it's helpful.

Unfortunately, I only have time for the required reading at Uni at the moment. So I am rereading (in preparation for my essay due next week) "Jane Eyre" and "Wide Sargasso Sea", and reading poetry.
I can't stand JE. Call me a cynical 21st century dweller, but I cannot stand the book.
Rochester says "Must you leave?"
Jane says "Yes, I must."
Rochester says "So you are leaving?"
Jane says "Yes, I am."
Rochester says "But won't you stay?"
Jane says "No, I won't."After 22 PAGES Jane finally gets to the door, only to turn around, go back, and do it all over again!!! My God, 5 pages would have been romantic. 10 pages would have been over the top. 15 pages would move into boredom territory. 22 PAGES is enough to make me want to shred the book.
ARGH!

I just finished "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich. It is an easy read. Very interesting and I think it is good for everyone to stop and think about how our society depends upon but doesn't really "see" the working poor, and how incredibly hard it is to live on low wage jobs.

Now I'm reading "The Straw Men" by Micheal Marshall.. hubby bought this book as we've read his other books (written under Micheal Marshall Smith.. "Spares" (which I really enjoyed) "One of us" and "Only forward")
His other books ahve been pretty much sci-fi, but this one, so far (about third of way in) isn;t sci-fi at all! It seems to be more of a thriller, so isn't what we were expecting. I am enjoying it though, its definately got me hooked cos I need to know whats going to happen next, I really have no idea where its going to go!!
Bought my copy of "Middlesex".. I was soo lucky. I've been saving for my trip, in two weeks, but decided to pop into book shop last Tuesday as I was in the area. They often ahve book signings going on there, and as I could see one happening I wandered over!! Only to find out it was Jeffrey Eugenides (the author of Middlesex!) I am now the very proud owner of a signed copy!!
Hope you're all enjoying the books you are reading

I just finished "The Seven Sisters" by Margaret Drabble. Great book. Woke up at 2AM as usual and was glad this time because I got to finish my book! The main character is a 50ish thrown over wife who's moved to London from the country to begin again. She writes a diary on her laptop and it's just very uplifting and funny. It's not about depression or anything but I thought she would feel right at home on Babble.
This is the end of the thread.
