I'm reading "Wintering A Novel of Sylvia Plath". It's really good. At first I didn't want to read it because I don't always like to have other people trying to build on somebody else's work. (I had the same objections to "The Hours" which I also ended up liking.) But it turns out I really like it. It's based on Sylvia Plath's last months in England. The chapters are named after the poems in her last book following the arrangment she made rather than the one Ted Hughes made after her death. The book is not kind to Ted! I think the author must have read Sylvia P in a women's lit class taught by one of those hairy legged womyn of the 70's. What I love about the book is the weather and the countryside, I want Sylvia's house in Devonshire! But it's also a very believable portrait of a young mother alone with two sick babies in a house with no telephone in the middle of winter.
I was never a big fan of Plath's poetry (I've heard Lady Lazarus quoted by too many moody adolescents) but Wintering was always a favorite of mine.
