Book idea: Hell's Angels-Hunter S. Thompson

Posted by Ritch on September 2, 2002, at 22:39:19

I saw a bunch of bikers riding about today, and wondered why September is the best month for motorcycling. I checked out some books and found an interesting potential read... What about Hell's Angels by Hunter Thompson. Definitely psycho-social stuff. Here's a link to an excerpt that sounded interesting: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345410084/drbobsvirte00-20

I looked through most of the sample pages. This is definitely not a book I would seek out in the library or a bookstore. The coarseness of it is slightly overwelming for me. It's good to expose oneself to another side of life that might have been feared. From what I read, My fears will be confirmed (but that's just me).

Re how the book is written: I get really impatient with lots of quotes from other writers thrown in the text of a book. If this book were chosen, I'd probably read it but I'm not sure it will be one I would recommend to anyone . One of the reviewers says there is not much meat but lots of numbers. Don't know if that's true but that part sounds too textbookish.

Hi,

I would be willing to read nearly anything. It just seems like the board is evaporating. I have read some very diverse books in the past, although I generally don't read very much anymore (employment tends to decrease reading). I have never read any of Thompson's stuff before. This seemed interesting because it is a peek inside something that is clouded with myths. I was just wondering if folks would leave the read with *less* fear of such people. Of course, Thompson could wind up *creating* more myth out of it than it deserves. His manic-journalistic writing style might get wearing after a chapter or two.

thanks for responding,

Mitch

When I reread my response to your suggestion it sounded a bit more negative than I actually meant.

I would be flabbergasted if this were a book which made the "Hells angels" something glamorous because of their antisocial reaction to civilization's generally civil treatment of each other.

Personally I think most of those myths are riddled with a lot of truth in them. (I don't mean bikers but I'm referring to Hells Angels.

I think I ould really turn heads in the teacher's room when I discuss my latest read. Could be fun in its own right!
