I just picked up my copy of the book today, they had lots of 'em at Barnes & Noble here. They said if they ordered it, it usually takes a couple of days.
Should we give it a month, 3 weeks and see where we are? I'm kind of anxious to get back into this again because of all the other issues going on, I just need a distraction or something I guess.
Please lemme know your thoughts on it :-)

You've definitely grabbed my attention with that statement. It may take me a week to even understand it!

Oh, I was thinking about some of his other stuff that I have read a long time ago. I think it was Cider House Rules. There is some narrative about the lobster fishermen in Maine. Anyhow, he was describing lobster pots or at least talking about them. I honestly didn't know what lobster "pots" were until I read that book! I went to a restaurant in Kansas City once called "The Lobster Pot" and I thought it just meant a literal pot of cooked lobster, not traps!Mitch

Do we all start talking about it on a certain date?

Hi Susan,I got my copy yesterday. I haven't started reading it yet. I am a little confused-I thought we were all going to *start* reading it at the same time! I guess I need to get busy, huh?

How about we make it 1 month from today? I think that would give everyone plenty of time to catch up and get it finished.....including me :-)
I have the first few pages finished and that's all.
Feel free to toss in your yea's and nay's...no where close to being set in stone...the cool thing about being here instead of school

It looks like we are both on the same page! I have just got through the preliminary setting/background at the beginning of the book, as well. The time sounds OK to me. I can pace myself that way-if it gets set.Mitch

Hopefully I'll be able to get it started after Sunday....
I'm really crunched for time but Ii'll be back soon.
How has it gone so far? The part I read reminded me of a movie with Ashley Judd as the mom of a boy, with a friend that killed her by hitting her in the head with a baseball at a game....does this sound familiar?
I've never read this author before, have you? I must say, the books I tend to read are Jonathan Kellerman, Stephen White, Tami Hoag, on that line....the first two are psychologist turned detective and Tami Hoag is a mystery/suspense on the legal side of it....

Hi Kiddo,I read Garp and Cider House many years ago when I was unemployed. I could tell right away that I was reading an Irving novel. You evidently have gotten further into it. I read prob. a dozen pages and that's it! However, I picked up some weird stuff already. He (Irving) always has people getting killed or bizarrely maimed in his novels-usually in the context of some kind of hilarious circumstance. The character of Owen Meaney is small, frail, waifish. Everybdoy is picking him up and carrying him around and then setting him on a coat/hat tree and letting him dangle there until they took him down... Uh oh, is Owen going to represent an unwilling Jesus? That's what it kinda looks like. "Ok, elevate me and hand me about, crucify me take me down, I am playing a part I can't get out of, but I don't really want to play it".... Weird. I hope this doesn't end leaving me too depressed. The other two of his had this riotuous (righteous?) humor in the beginning and then it fades into despairing weirdness.
oh well,
Mitch

Hi,
I want to use my brain for something besides hellish work-related activities in any way possible! I am going to have lots of trouble with some detaily things. I have a week of vacation from work scheduled week after next-if it is approved. If so, then I will try to mosey through the whole thing and make some notes. Otherwise-I am concerned about forgetting the whole thing!

I take this book on only because I've read it a few times before (long ago) and because I need the challenge.
I hope to make it to the discussion round but for me the journey is the goal. I've started on this path and for now that is good enough for me!
An Alii with a spinning brain knowing that at some point it will calm and I will have the power to follow the written word for more than a page......

Mine has 543 pages and I just stopped at the beginning of "The Angel" which is page 92. Let's see that is about 17%.. So far I am really getting into it until where it jumps to "Today blahblah 1987", and it was kind of a bucket of water on my head I wasn't looking forward to!
