Lamdage22,

I found a few studies that looked at glycine as an add-on treatment for schizophrenia in patients taking antipsychotics.

Regarding this one:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2611765

-- Participants (six of them) received 10.8 g of glycine a day in three divided doses for anywhere from four days to eight weeks as part of an open-label trial. The participants tolerated the glycine.

Regarding this one:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8037263

-- Fourteen participants received glycine as part of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. I wasn't able to access the full article, and the abstract didn't state what doses were used, how long the study went on for, or how well tolerated the glycine was.

Regarding this one:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8932891

-- Eleven participants received 0.8 g/kg of glycine a day for six weeks as part of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The glycine was well tolerated.

And finally, regarding this one:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9892253

-- Twenty-two participants received 0.8 g/kg of glycine a day for six weeks as part of a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. The glycine was well tolerated.

So, basically taking 0.8 g/kg of glycine for six weeks seems to be well tolerated among patients with schizophrenia. It would be hard to know for sure, though, how safe glycine therapy would be for beyond six weeks.

That sums up what I was able to find. I hope that you're doing well.

I think that any evidence that we might find to support the long-term use of high-dose glycine is likely to be anecdotal at this point. There was someone on this site posting under the username iladvocate who seemed to have success taking high-dose glycine as a primary antipsychotic into the long term. I don't know if that individual is still taking glycine, though.

After looking at the glycine studies that I posted here yesterday and after experiencing what seemed to be a loss of efficacy with the reishi supplement that I was taking, I decided to take some glycine last night. I'm not sure how high I'll increase my dose, but I want to give the glycine a trial. I'll report my results here, if you're interested in hearing about them.

Hi Thomatheus,

thanks for sharing. Yes im interested in your results.

I tried Sarcosine and it gave me akathisia and the anti negative symptoms effects where mild at best.

I am trying magnesium taurate and magnesium l-threonate and also NAG (N-acetyl-glucsomanine).

The latter for anxiety (although i don't have that much anxiety) and the former two for depression.

I already take Lithium Orotate which is awesome.

Hey Lamdage22,

Good luck with the N-acetyl-glucosamine and the two versions of magnesium.

I'll let you know how I do with the glycine. I've tried it previously, but not for very long or at a very high dose. As of right now, I'm still at a low dose and seem to be noticing a little something as far as my energy and concentration are concerned.

Hope you're doing well,
Tomatheus

That sounds good. So you are saying that there are no studies on humans for long term high dose 0.8g/kg glycine?

No running studies either?

I couldn't find any long-term studies that involved administering 0.8g/kg of glycine to participants over an extended period of time, but my search was far from exhaustive. Maybe I'll do a little more searching, and if I find anything, I'll let you know with a message here.

I found what basically amounts to a case report of a young man with obsessive-compulsive disorder and body dysmorphic disorder who was treated with 0.8 g/kg of glycine over a five-year period. My concentration is only so-so at the moment, so I wasn't able to read the whole article, but it seems that the individual whom the researchers followed had no safety issues with long-term, high-dose glycine. Of course, this report just describes one person's experience with long-term, high dose glycine, and I doubt that much can be concluded about the long-term safety of high-dose glycine based on a case report like this, but it does serve as a case example.

Here's a link to the article:

Interesting.

I read though that there only was a 16% improvement of negative symptoms. Although of course its better than nothing and one individual might have a 30% improvement.

Do you have a link to that case study?

Lamdage22,

I seemed to be responding to glycine as I was starting to increase my dose, with improvements in both my energy and concentration. But then, when I was around 5 or 6 g of glycine, my response started to fade. I increased my glycine dose to 7 g, and that didn't seem to produce any improvements, and I also noticed increased twitching in certain places and a possible slight increase in visual dysperceptions. I didn't want to increase my glycine dose any higher at that point and decided to add in another supplement (tocotrienols) to see if that would give me a little relief. So, now I'm taking 7 g of glycine and 50 mg of tocotrienols along with what I usually take (Abilify, niacin, and vitamin D3). My energy is somewhat better than how it is with just Abilify at this point, and it's hard to tell if my concentration is improved at all. I'll probably keep taking what I'm taking for a little bit to see if I keep noticing benefits from my current regimen.
