im new to this forum. i've suffered for about 15 years from generalized anxiety, social phobia and depression. in that time i've tried many treatments. i had some relief from a few of them but nothing was really effective in taking away the netagive thoughts and feelings.
recently i came across someone on another forum who was using manganese for social anxiety. i decided to try it myself and see if i got the same excellent results he was telling everyone about.
i'm now taking 2 solgar chelated manganese (8mg) daily and the results are fantastic. it feels like a benzo for me but without the spaced out feeling. it feels so natural. i dont feel drugged up at all. i find myself talking to people easily and feeling so relaxed which is highly unusual for me. it lasts an incredibly long time also compared to other sups ive taken. i can benefit the whole day after taking it in the morning.
i would just like to know if anyone else has tried manganese and if you could help me understand what it does that takes away my anxiety and depression so effectively. i have a few theories but im not entirely sure. i think it may be boosting GABA in my brain as it feels so much like a benzo.

Manganese doesn't seem to affect me
Having said that I've only tried Holland & Barret Brand, which probably explains my lack of response!
I might give Solgar a go..........

Careful, there was a recent study of quebec children that showed those with the highest manganese intake had the lowest IQ

I'm so glad the manganese is beneficial for you. I've taken manganese for over a year now, and it really does help with my anxiety, including social anxiety. I think, perhaps, I do not take enough to have a huge impact. All I can stand is 10mg per day, but it has made a difference in anxiety levels. Glad you're doing well!!
Have you tried the amino acid glycine in small doses? I found that it did help with anxiety. The other two supplements I like for anxiety are B6 and kava kava. I've had success with all these. You know, I really don't know if manganese boosts gaba. I never read anything like that about manganese. I know that it plays a part in superoxide dismutase. It has antioxidant properties. I'm sure it plays a role in neurotransmission somehow as it is a cofactor in many enzyme reactions as is zinc as well. Again, if it works for you stick with it. That's great to hear. Manganese is actually very good for you in small doses.

Oh, manganese also helps to lower high copper levels, but probably you would need high doses of it along with zinc to achieve this.

Yeah i've read about this study. interestingly they said the children were getting more mn from their food than the water. it seems that when its disolved in water its more bioavailable.
im not taking this as much anymore just to be cautious. it has got me thinking though that low GABA or high Glutamate may be the cause of my anxiety. manganese helps Glutamate to convert to GABA.

I find manganese helps with anxiety if your copper levels are too high. High copper levels will cause a feeling of overstimulation and possibly, depression in certain cases. For those who have Pyroluria, both zinc and manganese should be taken to help lower copper levels. I have used manganese for about a year, then determined that I didn't need it anymore, but I am sticking with the zinc permanently. So you could take manganese for 6 months or more, and then probably stop taking it once your copper levels have decreased. That's just how it worked out for me. I don't really need the manganese anymore, but the zinc is a must indefinitely. Anyone with pyroluria definitely has to supplement with zinc.

Manganese gluconate should work fine for most people. Maybe start off with 5-10mg per day. I find that I can only tolerate 10mg per day, and it did help with anxiety, especially during the Winter months. Some people with schizophrenia may need higher amounts, but I think the average person with depression probably shouldn't need more than 5-10mg per day. Again, it depends on individual needs, so I can't say how much is therapeutic for all people. Just know that 10mg per day was very helpful for me.
