Green Tea Supplements

Posted by saturn on April 19, 2007, at 9:47:13

I have a few questions regarding green tea supplements I'd like to list:

1. Does anyone here take a green tea supplement?

2. Are green tea's actions as a COMT inhibitor potentially dangerous alone or contraindicated with other meds?

3. I realize it's probably better to get the catechin antioxidants from the tea directly, but have read that you need approximately 10 cups to get significant health benefits. Too much for me. So is it safe to take a supplement that contains 315 mg EGCG/pill at a rate of 3/day?

4. If taking high dose green tea, should one eat a lot of yogurt to maintain the balance of colonic flora?

Thanks...Peace...Saturn.

I can't answer your questions, but all the studies I've read about green tea have indicated that 2 normal cups a day are pretty Ok to get the general health benefits. Unless you're trying to really get the benefits from it, ie COMT inhibition. (I read somewhere that rhodiola rosea was a COMT inhibitor)

I don't see why there would be any drug interactions - unless you're on a MAOI?

Why don't you just drink the stuff? Seems like the best way to me.

I drink at least 8 cups a day. It has saved me more than most of the other stuff I've tried. At first I wasn't too keen on it but now it's like my body craves it. I don't know if it's because it's a COMT-inhibitor (I don't know what that is) or the theanine, but it really helps me. Sorry I can't answer your questions...although when I tried theanine supplements they weren't of much help. I couldn't feel them much compared to drinking the tea.

Thanks for your response.

Waaaay too much fluid for me! The absolute minimum effective amount I've found anywhere recommends at least 4 cups, but most I've found seem to quote in the 10 cup range. May I ask where you've read that 2 cups are beneficial? I could drink 2 cups but anymore would be too much fluid. Peace...Saturn.

well i mean, drinking two cups a day is surely better than drinking no cups a day? That was partly the basis of my rationale. Plus, it might depend on the size of the cup. I mean, the traditional cups they use in Japan, look pretty small. More like large expresso cups. I'm sure 8 of those over a day wouldn't be too much fluid. I can't remember the studies.

I love all tea. All kinds, all flavours.

Good point...lots of small cups isn't really that much fluid. Thanks for the info...seems like a good route to go. Peace...Saturn.

I know this title may sound alarmist, but a new study showed that dogs and mice fed very large quantities of green tea died of liver failure. Apparently, however, a person can safely drink up to 10 cups of green tea a day.
