I am a depressed insomniac, to put it bluntly, and I am also going through a round of chronotherapy
so my judgment could hindered somewhat, but heres my question:
I hear alot about magnesium being great for sleep, but I havent felt very nocitable effects, it is just supposed to be very subtle?
or am I taking maybe the wrong kind, tat he wrong time, etc..? the kind I have is 250mg from some VCS as magnesium oxide.
I've been taking one before bed for a few days now. are there better formulations? any help would be great, -thank you.

Please be aware that magnesium can worsen depression/insomnia if taken in too high dose, since it works as an inhibitor of CNS.
I think the best form of Magnesium is Magnesium Orotate. 100 mg of elemental magnesium will be sufficient. It is usually recommended to supplement magnesium with calcium in a 1:2 ratio since they are considered antagonists.Orotate is easily absorbed and converted to uridine, which is known to be antidepressive in animal models (forced swim test), especially if combined with fish oil.

magnesium glycinate is ok too, in fact most types are EXCEPT the oxide variant which is poorly absorbed.
Solgar do a 'chelated magnesium' which when quizzed turns out to be magnesium glycinate. Good quality and cheap too.
Rule of thumb is take it to 'bowel tolerance'.
I know someone suggested adding fish oil. If it works then thats fine, but be aware that some people respond badly to fish oil and one of the side effects is terrible insomnia. I know as I am one of those people.
I did kinda find niacinamide combined with the magnesium was pretty good, but mainly because my insomnia seemed to be anxiety based.
Sorry its not conclusive but we are all different and what works for one doesn't always work for another, but I hope my comments help you to find some big Zzzzzzz's soon!

thanks, I'll get a non-cvs brand maybe glycinate would be the best because it sounds like glycine (?)

Yep, glycinate is the comination with glycine. Apparently glycine acts as a claming amino acid on the brain so works well with magnesium for those with insomnia/anxiety.
Melatonin is another possibility but I've not tried it so can't comment on its effectiveness.
I know this sounds silly, but have you tried the old warm milk with sugar in and a couple of malted milk biscuits regime? Sometimes the simplest solutions are often overlooked.

According to world authority on nutrition, Dr Michael Colgan, Magnesium Aspartate is far and away the best absorbed, 10x that of Oxide which is the poorest.
