Hello,
I am interested in taking a Omega 3 and rhondia combo for major depression. I have been on effexor and wellbutin, but effexor wipes out my sex drive so much I don't even feel like myself. I was wondering what dose(s) people take of these two and if anyone takes them in combo or not? Also has anyone used either of these for depression who was previously on a SSRI or other AD?
My last question is where are people finding grams of fish oil? the only ones I see in my health store is in mg? How much of that makes a gram (yes I have no clue what grams are)Any feedback would be so appreciated. I would love nothing more than to take something natural instead of these horrible AD's. Once I tried to get off of effexor and got really really scary brain zaps! i would wean myself off VERY VERY slowly to make any change to try to avoid that but that really convinced me that effexor is a scary drug to withdraw from. really scary.
So any info, including doses and brands would be so appreciated!
Best wishes,
April

Ususally omega supplements are measured by content of EPA and DHA.
Many authors thing that it is the EPA that confers the most antidepressant effect. Many studies suggest about 1 gram = 1000mg of EPA is beneficial.
As far as brand, I like Now Foods brand. It is available in many countries and their products are well tested, and screened.
I notice that I am more blissfull. Life is a bit more smooth. Stressfull things don't hit me as hard, and don't penetrate as deep.
Though, studies suggest that it can take a little while for the brain to become saturated, so beneifit may occur gradually. I personally noted change within about 2 weeks. If you keep a diary, it may help.

Omega 3's present quite a problem to me as I'm vegetarian and I will not eat fish full stop.
There are vegetarian sources of DHA from algae, but at present there is no vegetarian source of EPA. Some ALA present in oils such as Flaxseed oil for example will convert to DHA and EPA but the ratio of conversion is quite poor.
Possibly the best way for a vegetarian to get enough EPA is to ingest the Omega 3 SDA this is known to convert to EPA. Interestingly after reading the site below I've found that SDA is a precursor to ETA which I've not heard of before.

Anyway enough of my ramblings if you don't mind eating fish then you won't have a problem supplementing EPA and DHA to the diet.
There's still plenty of research to be done with Omega fatty acids.
This is the end of the thread.
