2 much 4 depress'n: ginseng, ginkgo, CoQ10, Sam-e?

Posted by chienandalusia on January 4, 2006, at 19:39:09

Hello,

I'm suffering from pretty bad depression. I just stopped taking Provigil and started taking a bunch of supplements: 500mg of Acetyl L-carnitine, 150mg of Magnesium citrate, 600 mg of St. John's Wort (1.8mg hypericin), 500mg of Siberian Ginseng (standarized to 0.8% Eleutherosides), 500mg of Ester-C, 300 mg of Ginkgo Leaves (not sure if standarized), 60 mg Ginkgo (standarized to 24%) with Vinpocetine, and 400-800 mg of Sam-e. And I drink plenty of coffee. Anything wrong with this, you think? About a month ago I finished 16 weeks of accutane.
Thanks,
Paul

A few of the herbs may interact. The SAMe + SJW + ginkgo, may lead to excess stimulation.

Your experience may differ.

Thanks Linkadge,

Can you recommend any books on using herbs and supplements to manage one's mental and physical health?

No, I really havn't read enough books on the subject, to recomend any. Perhaps there are others on the board that would be more capable of offering such advice.

I do read a number of case reports online, usually just by using a search engine.

One supplement I would definately recomend (since your case may have roots in your acutaine use) is omega-3 supplements.

I have read some case reports of omega-3 fatty acids being used sucessfully to treat acutaine induced depression.

There have been a number of theories for acutaine induced depression, and one is a neurolipid theory. Acutaine works by altering the lipid profile of the skin, and may also alter the lipid profile of the brain.

Omega-3 posesses significant antidepressant properties in certain people (myself included),
and may have a specific utility in treating depression caused by acutaine.

There were a few articles discussing the connection, which I will see if I can find again.

If you do choose to add omega-3 supplements to your regiment, it can take a number of weeks for your brain to incorperate them.

You asked about books. My doctor and I are both working with this one... The Mood Cure. They have a website also. There is a treatment center in California that treats patients naturally, and that's where this book comes from.

Mostly it deals with 4 different types of depression and various ways to target each, or combinations of them. Their primary treatments are targetted amino acid supplements. But they also speak highly of st johns wort and omega3 fish oils. I wish they had more info about herbs but they don't. It is a real good book though.
