manganese - reverse TD

Posted by Jeroen on July 5, 2005, at 21:08:00

In reply to Re: need some advice urgent, posted by Phillipa on July 3, 2005, at 19:24:38

hi im in therapy, the lecithin dont give me any improvement, id like to take manganese and see what it does with my TD, can you help me please with the manganese?

tomorrow im getting 200 mg of seroquel then next week 300 mg

One doctor has found that administering the trace mineral manganese (15 mg per day) can prevent the development of TD and that higher amounts (up to 60 mg per day) can reverse TD that has already developed.

Hi Link,

I don't know much about manganese - I thought you'd know more about it. If it was used to treat TD, what dose would be suitable?

Not sure. I have not read this. Its fairly inexpensive isn't it. It probably won't hurt.

Take a good look at quercetin, if you can find any. I had many movement problems when comming off SSRI's. Many have improved since starting the quercetin.

managenese is certainly worth trying; its cheap and harmless. The most interest seems to be focused on the antioxidants, since some docs think TD results from an oxidative stress induced by antipsychotics. The studies on Vitamin E are kind iffy; some point to helpful effects, some dont, and there are all kinds of problems with the studies themselves. Anyway, Vitamin E @ 1600 IU daily seems to be the *it* dose for TD. Lecithin may also help, as might a number of other antioxidants...alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q-10, that kinda thing. The B vitamins might also help. As for medication...Klonopin seems pretty popular, but it isnt that effective. "masking" TD with neuroleptics is a popular strategy, especially now that atypical antipsychotics can be used that are less likely to worsen the TD than older drugs. Personally, I'd try Abilify if you're going the neuroleptic route. Its non-sedating and seems to control TD pretty well. Clozaril controls TD, but its pretty hardcore, and often requires the administration of anti-seizure drugs such as Depakote that worsen sedation and other problems.

cant do abilify

hey! The dosage used for suppressing TD varies from person to person. If you currently have a psychotic disorder, or a severe mood disorder (like bipolar I) that responds to a neuroleptic, the best course of action may be to first treat your disorder, and then see if your TD responds. If, for instance, you have mood-control at 300mgs, that should be the dose you use to see if it also controls your TD. If it doesn't, you could try slightly upping the dose (avoid going up too much; this can become a sort of "chemical straijacket"), adding traditional TD meds like Klonopin, or using a different neuroleptic.

Hi Jeroen,

>do you think its poison?

No, I don't - but don't take more than one tablet per day.

>i will take it for 3 weeks

Why 3 weeks?

Perhaps you could take one tablet per day for 3 weeks and then reduce the dose to 1/4 of a tablet daily?

Kind regards

Administration of the trace mineral manganese (at 15mg per day) may prevent the development of tardive dyskinesia and higher amounts (up to 60mg per day) may reverse tardive dyskinesia that has already developed. [Manganese in dyskinesias. Am J Psychiatry 1976; 133: p.105, Am J Psychiatry 1997; 134: p.1448]

i have a bottle with AMINO ACID CHELATED MANGANESE 50 MG

is it the same stuff???? i will start tomorrow

Melatonin A double-blind study demonstrated that 10mg of melatonin given at 8pm for 6 weeks is an effective treatment for tardive dyskinesia, although the magnitude of the effect was only modest. Other natural substances that have been reported to improve tardive dyskinesia include vitamin E, manganese and vitamin B6. It is possible that using these compounds in combination would be more effective than using any one individually. [Arch Gen Psychiatry 2001;58: pp.1049-52]
