Does anyone have experience with acetyl-L-carnitine? My doctor recommended it to treat the anergia component of my bipolar depression. I know that it is sometimes chosen to treat CFS.
I'm not sure how much to take. I've seen studies that used 2 grams a day. Expensive.
Any comments?
Thanks.

Your doctor is staying abreast of some good, but fringe (i.e. less conventional) research. Yes, this can be a very effective supplement. No, there is little (if any) risk from trying it.
If you buy the bulk, it has a sharp acetic acid odour....it is a fragile chemical, and should be kept dry (make sure it has a dessicant), and in a dark cool place. Tightly closed, in the fridge, for example.

I've decided to go with carnitine 1500mg and folic acid 1600mcg and B-Complex 50.
Not that I really know what I'm doing...

Is it necessary to take carnitine three times a day, or can I take it all at once in the morning?
I would also be curious what you think of using folic acid at a dosage of 1600mcg per day?
Thanks.

I really don't know how necessary it is to space it out. I don't. One morning smoothie, with all the weird stuff in it, is how I do it (when I do do it). I'm not good at remembering to take my goodies.

> - ScottThat's a pretty high dose. I wouldn't stay at that level, but it can be used for acute treatment. I.e. a specific, folate-sensitive deficiency/defect has been identified.
