Supplementing Effexor XR

Posted by gadman on February 5, 2005, at 11:00:23

Hi All... I am looking for something to supplement my Effexor XR 75 mg Dosage. (Or possibly cut down my doseage to 37.5 if I can find a decent supplement)...

I am taking it for GAD and minor depression that goes along with GAD. What I am looking to do is increase the chances for a hit on norepinephrine and dopamine at the lower levels of this Med.

Here are supplements I am considering...

Gaba
B-Complex
Aminos
Inisotol
Niacin
L-glutamine
L-phenylalanine
L-Tryptophan
SAM-E

What do you think?

Are there any of these that I should avoid? (Might cause contradictions)...

>You might want to look up the term called serotonin syndrome. You may decide not to take any form of serotonin precursers- L-tryptophan, 5HTP, or even L-theanine.
Effexor, from my undertstanding is very addictive and causes very severe withdrawal symtoms. You might want to thoroughly read the product insert or look it up in the Phyicians Desk Reference.
I would much prefer taking the most powerful Benzo over Effexor! My sister is in the process of titrating (slowly reducing her dosage) so as to ditch it. It gave her debilitating rheumatoid arthritis AND greatly weakened her immune system.

I personally think the Effexor withdrawal is a bit over-hyped....

I tapered down myself and experienced the seratonin withdrawal (depression, adgitation) but I think that is normal when you are getting off any SSRI.

Yeh, I was thinking the same thing about avoiding the specific seratonin agents (L-tryptophan, 5HTP)..

What does everyone think of supplementing with SAM-E?

Well I think I have narrowed it down to using SAM-E, with a B-100 Complex along with GABA and DLPA.

This combo should not hurt at least (I think)... The question is how what part of this formula will actually help and what part I will be peeing my money away....

Oral GABA is probably not effective, although some people report some calming action. Oral GABA does have peripheral effects, but is generally believed to not have central (nervous system) effects.

The others are good ideas to try. Best to try the DLPA and the SAMe separately, so you know exactly what they do. The B-100 is a good all around supplement, in any case.

NiacinAMIDE for GAD, not niacin. They are not the same thing.

Thanks Larry!

I have tried the DLPA this past week and it had little effect on me. I am going to give it a few days and try SAMe.
