Fish oil definitely has other stuff in it, but let's just ignore that issue for the time being.

Omega-3 is a description of a whole family of similar fatty acids. The fatty acids in fish oil, the ones we want to focus on here, are omega-3 fatty acids. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you mention omega-3 pills, but I'd bet that they contain flax oil (read the label....it's important). Flax oil contains a shorter omega-3 fatty acid than is found in fish oil. (There is a wee bit of the shorter stuff in fish oil, but it's not important here.)

For many years, it was believed that flax oil would provide the same health benefits as would, say, fish oil. However, we now know that to be false. There really is no substitute for obtaining the longer omega-3 fatty acids from your diet, already formed.

Fish oil is way better for you than flax oil, if you're considering mood stabilization or heart protection. Just remember to always take it with your biggest meal of the day. Otherwise, you might get "rancid fish burps", and they are rather gross.

Yes, that is true. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage (which is why they're routinely removed from processed food, leading to the deficiency problems that most people have). Really, you should be taking vitamin E anyway (I'm big on supplements), but supplemental fish oil requires that you take some vitamin E. I'm sorry if I don't harp on that enough, everybody.

Fish oil, hands down. Sam's Club would be fine as a source. Walmart's fish oil meets my personal quality expectations.

Member's Mark
Omega 3
Fish Oil
1000mg Natural Concentrate
Dietary Supplement with Omega-3 Fatty Acids

300 softgels

It only cost 6 dollars.

Natural Fish Oil Concentrate 1000mg
EPA 180mg
DHA 120mg

Take 3 times a day, after a meal.

----
I read about how women can process flax into omega 3 more easily, since genetically they need to since they pass it on to their newborns at birth and also when breast feeding. A lack of omega 3 in a woman after birth causes depression. But men have to eat massive quantities of it to do any good.

--

Anyway, its from fish oil, so I suppose its all good. I looked up the brand name on the internet to make sure they had good processing standards, and they do.

Is it possible to overdose on this stuff?

I believe all excess vitamins I take get urinated out. I'm taking a mega dose of vitamin B, B12, and vitamin E now, as well as regular mega vitamins(contains a lot of vitamins in it).
Any chance of any of that causing me problems?

I'm taking garlic pills also. I looked up information about them, but couldn't find anything about overdosing, so I suppose it is safe. Garlic helps kill off the infection caused when Candida gets too much sugar, and since I have lived my entire life mostly from junk food, I'm sure I probably have it.
http://www.curezone.com/diseases/candida/ is an interesting read about that.

That's an excellent price.

That's a rationalization of the gender difference, but it is a sensible one.

Of flax oil, yes, but only in the context of EPA and DHA. Flax oil is still good for you. If you use fish oil, you don't need any flax oil, as there are other dietary sources that will cover that base adequately.

Good for you. Informed consumer.

Frankly, no. The Inuit consume 20 or more grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day. You could find that your own body does like that large a dose, but that may just be that you're not used to it. Some people do report an intolerance to fish oil (side effects that are intolerable)....we're all different. My advice is generic. Your experience will be specific.

> I believe all excess vitamins I take get urinated out.

Not all. That's the point. In order for your kidneys to be able to excrete the vitamins, they must already be in the blood. Kidneys are stupid. They do not differentiate between vitamins and waste products of metabolism. While the kidneys are blindly dumping nutrients into urine, all your tissues have enhanced access to the high blood nutrient concentrations. Just having it in your blood is not good enough; it must have an opportunity to get into the tissues. Every tissue/organ is membrane-bound. Just like the blood-brain barrier, there are similar membranes in every tissue. The only way you can possibly supply your tissues with nutrients is to get them into the blood first (excluding IV and injection).

Yes, you can potentially develop urinary tract infections, as the bacteria think that potent urine is nutritious as well. If you get an irritation down there, drink cranberry juice. It has a chemical in it that prevents the binding of bacteria to the walls of the bladder and urethra, and thereby prevents colonization by bacteria.

I've never heard of garlic overdose, but raw garlic is better. If you think you have candida, you should consider going low-carb.

Thanks.
