30 weeks is abit extreme. Thats more than half a year......

Oh well. I live in Finland. People here are terrified of Russia as we were under Russian rule for quite a while, and there was a terrible war. In fact, my grandparents had to move, ie they were refugees I suppose, because the bit of land that they're from is now Russia, but it was part of Finland. They had to move with the Finnish border its quite sad. Often Finnish families living in this area had 24 hours to up and leave....they sent their children first on the trains, you see. And my grandparents lived next to the railway station on the Finnish side and would look after these kids.....and hoped that their parents weren't shot (if often happened). Anyway, all I can say is that Russia is alot more stable these days. Thankfully. You should see the border boundries here between Finland/Russia..... Its something out of James Bond.

Anyway this is rather off topic. Its very sad that the bloke died and the other journalist. And all those Oliogoarchs (I can't spell!) bilionaires...... Putin made some slighly risque joke a while back didn't he? But don't they all these days, when they think the microphone is switched off??

I'm sorry you are blocked again, Zeugma. I enjoy your posts. They are interesting and stimulate discussion on issues of importance. Too bad it can't be recognized or accepted that issues of importance often are contentious and divisive. It is the nature of the political beast. Seems a pity to have a politics board when debate has to be stifled to accommodate narrow-mindedly, subjectively applied and unduly restraining civility guidelines.

I really don't get this at all. This is meant to be a politics board. Who was supposed to be offended by Zeugma's post? If someone disagreed with his/her analysis, a politics board would presumably be the ideal place to put an opposing point of view. That is how we best establish truth by putting different views across. I know that most of us on babble are troubled emotionally and personal attacks/judgements should never be part of a supportive site. But if it is deemed that we are all too fragile to cope with having our poltical leaders criticized then I believe that this is taking sensitivty a bit too far.

No one is *actually* offended.
Some people *might* be offended, but they do not come here, and even then it would be iffy.
I assume it was exemplary treatment appropriate to one of Z's nationality, for unsuitable attitudes and demeanour.
(Australians do not greatly respect any politicians)
But maybe not?
It puzzles me.

I only post in the hope that this post will divert attention from my many other posts worthy of blocks. I know that if I join the outcry over this block, my offensive posts may be overlooked.

I'm a scoundrel really. I have no empathy at all.

The purpose of this board is to say to each other, "I'm OK, You're OK" and pat each other on the back.

30 weeks seems cruel and unusual to me.

****I have not read the thread that lead up to the block, I'm commenting on blocking policy in general****

It might help me if an offended party (just once) would step forward and say that 30 weeks feels like justice.

I wanted someone to get blocked once, but only for a week. That's not an option though.

The "victim" here [of the offensive behavior] seems to have very little connection to the proceedings of the blocking process.

Sure would be nice if we could either talk these disagreements out like adults, or count on the same processes that help victims recover their dignity and worth in the criminal justice system.

As it is, the victim of an offense is thrice victimized

1) once, by the actual incivility/offensive comment

and

2) again, by the guilt that he/she has sent a peer to block-land. A land of cruel and unusual punishment, including (but not limited to)- social ostracism, forced silence, hopelessness in changing the blocking system, and lack of access to resources that would aid in an appeal.

3) "victim" is unable to understand a blockee's mind, and thus may always wonder what role his or her own behavior played in a dispute. A feeling of "survivor's guilt" in which both parties contributed to an uncivil exchange, but only one ended up being punished.

I agree, that would be nice.

> 2) ... the guilt that he/she has sent a peer to block-land.

That should be minimized because:

> The "victim" here [of the offensive behavior] seems to have very little connection to the proceedings of the blocking process.

Though of course they may still *feel* guilty...

> 3) ... A feeling of "survivor's guilt" in which both parties contributed to an uncivil exchange, but only one ended up being punished.

I try, with probably varying degrees of success, to be fair when both parties contribute...

Zeugma's Block

In reply to Re: blocking policy, posted by Dr. Bob on December 8, 2006, at 8:45:49

I hope the policy of escalating blocks has changed, because if it hasn't Zeugma is at risk of a year long block for entirely unremarkable assertions (should he come back and make them) that every man and his dog agrees with.

His block was the most unreasonable I have seen here.

When is it over?

Unfortunately, the statement he made in the post he was blocked for does not fit your description above. If one is concerned about another block, the risk of blocking likely can be reduced by consulting a "civility buddy" if one wishes.

> When is it over?

Best of my knowledge: June 22 or 23.
