civility checkers

Posted by alexandra_k on September 20, 2005, at 20:59:40

i've been wondering about this for a while...

whether there could be a list somewhere of people who are (generally) willing to check over posts to help make sure they are within civility guidelines.

then if someone wanted to get someone to check their post they could Babblemail people off the list 'would you mind checking a post for me?'

then they can say yes or no depending on where they are at and how much time they have available

and that way...
with a list of people
it would be easier for people to find someone willing to check their post
and it would be easier for people to say 'no' if they aren't in the place to deal with it or if they find they don't have the time

just a thought

I would volunteer, except I think I need civility checkers more than others need me! Maybe someday...

Sure, what if people just volunteered on this thread?

I would say that there's enough checking going on already. Because of the rules here, I'm concerned that some may be holding back stuff that could benefit the community.

Yeah. And that is the point in the civility checking. So people can write freely and express themselves... And then pass that on to someone who may be able to help them formulate what they have to say in a way that is within civility guidelines.

The rules are basically... Not to say anything to attack or accuse another poster or make them feel put down. That sounds reasonable enough to me....

Then what in a month or two when this thread disapears into the archives? How will people know who has volunteered or that there even is this option? People aren't going to do a "civility checker" search if they don't know it is even available.

It really doesn't matter to me whether or not there are official volunteer civility checkers, but this thread isn't going to be visible forever.

Ok...enough of my nitpicking! :-p

I believe there are three deputies, so Dr. Bob and the three deputies makes four people who are already checking for adherence to the civility guidelines. I'm concerned that if everyone starts checking up on everyone else, this place might turn into "Psycho-vigilantes" or "Vigilante Babble." Let's not lose sight of what Psychobabble is supposed to be about -- education and support.

Hey.

It would of course be up to the individual posters to decide whether they wanted to send a post on to a civility checker or just run the risk of posting it and having it considered uncivil. I don't know whether people would be likely to send it to a civility checker or not. Maybe people will choose to continue posting posts where they are unsure whether they will be PBC'd or blocked for them. But this way people may have more of a choice...

People do sometimes say that they have difficulty expressing themselves in a way that is considered civil and so I thought that Babblers might be willing to help one another out with this.

Yeah there are four people.
But how much quicker is someone likely to be able to look at it if there were 5 or 9 or 15?

Follow up question...

Ok...now I'm a little confused about these "civility checkers". My initial impression of alexandra's post was that if a person wasn't sure about a post they could babblemail it to one of the "civility checkers" to get a second opinion before "officially" posting it. And this list would give the names of people who were willing to take on that job. But from reading Sarah's comments and alexandra's replies, I'm guessing that you guys are referring to checking a post that has already been posted on the site. <shakes head in confusion>

Alexandra, will you please explain a little more on if these "civility checkers" are meant to check a requested post before or after it is posted?

It seems redundant to have someone checking a post after it has already been posted. As Sarah said...that is what deputies are for.

Yes, that was the thought.

No, that wasn't what I meant.
I hoped my last post cleared up that confusion...
Thanks for making it more explicit :-)

I guess I just hesitated because...well, never mind...my own issues, I guess.

I've never had a PBC, so I think I'd be okay at it.

You can always say 'no' if you don't feel up to it.

In a way... Thats kind of the point of my suggestion. I know that in my own case I vary quite a bit with respect to how much I am able to support other people and how much I am struggling to stay afloat myself. For me, this would be a relatively safe way of trying to help out because I know I can always say 'sorry but I'm not up to it' and other people will be available. So I really don't have to feel pressure to do it when I am struggling.

> I've never had a PBC, so I think I'd be okay at it.

I think you would be terrrific at it.

I believe Dr. Bob could either list the group in the FAQ somewhere, or make a permanent link to this thread on the page...similar to the books we've identified as popular on the Psych board.
