Dr. Bob...PLEASE read...how to scrap the ban...

Posted by jay on May 29, 2005, at 18:57:31

Just another way of doing things...please hear me out. I thought this as a really new way to prevent 'bans', and many other problems. Let's say you take yourself and a team of about 10 other Babbler's. These people could be elected...or rotated...etc. This 'Board of Approval' would then have to approve a post before it goes up. You would maybe still have the option for your bans, even if a post is 'approved', but really, what could happen is a return-post to the poster that they couldn't post because of "this" and "that", etc. Maybe it sounds labourious, but I think we can just give people a second, even third or fourth, chance before given a block. Plus, if a post requires a PBC, it won't go up until approval. I know....complicated..just please let me know what you think. (And anyone else too.)

Thanks,
Jay

There is a forum that has great discussions and perhaps uses some of the suggestions in this thread. I am a member , but you will not find my name on posts.

Seems like it would really delay the speed of viewing posts.

It may slow things down.....but I still think it beats giving year-long bans. There are many alternative ways to do this. I just want other's
ideas.

Yeah it would..but think of a few things...like the lack of bans and all the hard feelings that go with it. There has *got* to be a way...no, I think there *is* a way, we just have to be creative enough...know what I mean?

Thanks and best,
Jay

Perhaps instead of having each post reviewed before it gets posted, maybe those who return after a lengthy ban could be put on a kind of probation period. Maybe they would have to send their posts to a willing civility buddy for approval/editing before posting. Once the civility buddy and Dr. Bob agree that the poster appears to understand the civility rules, then the poster could be "cut loose" again.

Just a thought to take your idea and make it less daunting sounding to me, and to address the issue of long blocks.

Brief comment here-- I don't like the long blocks either, for a variety of reasons.

I haven't been to a board yet (whether about younger-looking skin, or banjos, or psych issues) that did not ban folks, sometimes permanentaly.

So, just my 2 cents, one has to have a bit of trust in the moderator(s), but also give folks another opportunity--like, maybe doubling blocks is not the way to go. Maybe adding a week is the way to go...or 5 days, etc.

Who knows? But because there are decidedly harmful people on the web (and maybe this site also), there should always be an option to ban someone forever, IMHO.

That's all from me on this one! Hope it makes some sort of sense!

I like the civility buddy idea, but I think I'd rather have it be voluntary rather than required...
