A party sounds nice and I would like to go but looking ahead in time from where I am now (in time) is not feasable. I'm geographically in the Gulf Coast area. It would be nice to have something at a hotel or within easy transportation distance of a relatively inexpensive hotel. I'm speaking as someone who's trying to avoid renting a car and trying to avoid driving in Chicago traffic! I'm not really familiar with the city and the thought of driving is, well, frightening! I think there must be wonderful stuff to see - perhaps a get-together at a hotel and that evening or the next day a visit to some interesting place together like a museum or whatever. Sort've like a mini version of a conference? People could go together by bus or taxi or if they drove into town they could drive to the museum (or whatever) and meet up with the rest of the group at a given time. For that matter, I've never seen the Univ of Chicago - that might be novel too for folks from a distance.

I want to be there! I would definitely bring my husband with, is it cool with everyone if we bring spouses? I'd probably drive as I'm in Minnesota and it's not too long of a drive.

Is the IH at the U still up for grabs? I'd be interested in finding somewhere cheap to sleep, especially considering that Chicago is going to be packed for the Blues Fest!

I think the more relaxed and casual the gathering's locale is, the easier it will be for people to make it.

I get pretty panicky when I think about trying to find stuff and follow directions, however, the web helps with printing out driving directions and so forth, and my spouse is a natural navigator, so I should good to go :-)

You can always plan more stuff to do after the fact, the point is to get people there in the first place.

Can we take a poll of who can speculatively meet?

Post the poll on every board with a link to this board?

Post the dates and maybe links for places to stay and so forth, just to help people get started....

I wanna do this thang!

Our soiree date is smack dab in the middle of Blues Fest. June 9 - 12. It's reason enough to come to Chicago - but accommodations will be hard come by, or priced accordingly.
Still (wistfully) what an adjunct to a birthday party!!!!

Does the University of Chicago have meeting rooms available? Discounts on hotel rooms for visitors?
The Hyde Park area might be less congested than Grant Park.

The Grant Park area will be be packed on June 11 because of the Blues Fest. I looked at the city of Chicago's website and it draws 680,000 people.

Parking and hotels might be a problem. Not to mention my fear of crowds. We could still go to the Blues Fest or the Art Institute, just not stay near them? Maybe mass transit or cab it?

Meetings in rooms instead of a picnic? Maybe decide on lodging first? Hotels always have meeting rooms...

I suggested that it might be a good idea to get a rough idea of numbers to plan better, but Dr. Bob pretty much told me it was premature at this point.

And gently pointed out that I wasn't on the planning committee anyway.

Maybe you'll have better luck. :)

Palmer House seems very nice and reasonable.

I think we should get more of a feeling for who is coming. I can drive or take Amtrak. Those coming a distance will need to plan further ahead.

Not to but right in...but I will...

Before trying for a head count, has the date been firmed up? June 11th? Or was July being considered as well?

Perhaps I was confused by a previous post....

An idea might be to propose (at least) two dates, and see which seems best for the most Babblers...?

Are there any Bed and Breakfast places in the area? Or, in an area where one can take public transportation? What about last minute attendees who have last minute changes that allow them to come? Although I doubt I can make it, the idea of visiting the upper Midwest is appealing. Right now I'm kind've enjoying the thought vicariously through the postings!

Except for the heat, July would work better for me or at least later in June. Festivals do make things tough re housing (no doubt the Palmer will be a lot more expensive that week).

On a slightly separate note ... I had no idea there were any hotels around that had *shared* bathrooms! Sounds very quaint!!! Except for practical purposes! Is that more typical in Chicago or other older cities in the north? (Sorry for the slight digression)

Is it possible to take a boat ride on Lake Michigan? Swim there? I kind've like the idea of being able to rent a room in a Univ. dorm possibly if it's relatively quiet in the summer. Some of us are a bit "older", y'know! <grin> Remember, too, it's a big country and some of us reside in distant areas!

I think it's a good idea to post a note on each message board - that's how I happened to wander into this!

Are there "related" places that might let us use a room for an afternoon? Like a Jungian library or some other psychologically related establishment? Or, a library or museum? I'm not really familiar w/Chicago. Also, I'm definitely not pushing any method or "brand" of psychology either - there is a Jungian center in this town. I guess I'm trying to think in terms of who (not including board users/writers) might see this as an opportunity to bring attention to their facility or might have similar interests (i.e., self development, mental wellness, whatever). Possibly even a little theater during the daytime?

Okay, I want to wish everyone a great time preparing and experiencing a get-together!

Hi all,

I realize we definitely need some idea of when this will take place. It would however be nice to have a 'show of hands' by those of us who would really be interested in attending or we are making these plans in vain. After the show of hands and a choice of a few dates I think we can start to get into the real planning phase. terrics

SO! LET'S HAVE A SHOW OF HANDS!!

O.K. 1. How about a choice of dates?
2. Headcount
3. Where to stay..Lg enough to accomodate all who want to go.
4. If all the above fall ino place we should plan a few activities, and that is definitely not my thing.
The above for items may work well in that order. However I am still wondering about a temporary headcount to see if we should continue planning. If no one can go we are working on this for naught. terrics

Did I leave anyone out? I didn't mean to, sometimes I'm just not sure if people only want to contribute to the discussion or if they'd like to be more involved...

Maybe this would be more organized if one of you were the spokesperson for the committee? So then I'd know what to link to, announce, etc.?

Hi,
Who of us is the most verbose on the psychobabbles? There are some people who come up with a variety of answers to individual problems. Someone like that could make a good organizer or at least throw us some good organizing skills. Also we should vote on what is more important first; a Headcount or a date? Anyone want to vote? Please do. terrics

Date is most important. Some might be able to come on one date and not another, so a headcount without a date is iffy.

I'm not particular on a date, so I'll pass on the vote.

...I've found in the past, if you ask for a headcount for "one Satuday in June or July" for example, the first thing folks ask back is, "well, it depends on exactly which day..."

If we find later that the agreed upon date is the one and only reason the headcount is disappointing, we could try to shift it then.

Good thoughts. I think you are right...Let's vote on dates first. Who suggests the dates?
We have to start on this thing or we'll get no- where. So,where will we do the polling and who will be in charge of results. Also, who decides the date/s. terrics
P.S. I think this will be a fun thing to do.

Maybe Dr. Bob can set something up like the babbleometer page where people can vote on one of two or three dates.

Like babbleometer because it limits the number of times you can answer. This is to avoid stacking the vote. It probably also needs to be limited to registered users, like posting is.

I think the three dates should be the actual birthday, the weekend before and the weekend after.

Then an announcement on where to vote could be put on all the boards, like the one about a party is now.
