Elle, didn't you suggest that we ignore disturbing or triggering posts?
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20031120/msgs/282335.html
The next time you see an inappropriate subject line (involving bestiality or otherwise), perhaps you can choose to ignore it.

I certainly did, glad to see you are paying attention.

If you go over to the grief board, I already asked the poster in question to not post to me. I have no intention of paying his posts anymore attention. However, I do feel the need to tell Dr. Bob about posts I find uncivil, just as you do with posts you find upsetting regarding faked suicide attempts.

I think some posters should be banned from the site when it's in your face garbage like what was posted.
There are times when someone needs to go somewhere else. There are sites that would welcome the poster to discuss beastiality.
I go to another board unrelated to mental illness or beastiality for that matter. If someone comes up with a post for attention, unrelated to anything about the sites purpose, they are banned and the thread is closed.
Human relations are difficult enough. I, for one, don't want to hear about a boy and his dog.
I'd give them the gong.
There's a difference between uncivil and 'shock posts.'
I'm just stating my opinion, not trying to change policy, although it's worth considering.

Can I just add in here... to Elle... look at Babble substance use. There's lots of illegal activity discussed there. And many things are illegal some places and not others...e.g. homosexuality? I believe has only got legal in some states in the last decade...
Offensiveness is another matter, and I agree that graphic sexual stuff is not good...

Ever actually. I'd rather judge an argument on its merits than its spelling.
But particularly not on a board where many people either have conditions that make spelling difficult, or on psych meds that make spelling difficult.

Hi there pixypop,
One thing I've learned over the years here at Babble is that ANY post that begins with the poster expressing the word 'sorry' usually isn't one of sincere regret, or penitence. It is even more rare that they are mournful or sad when they start out with 'sorry'.
Would you be so kind as to take a gander at these here civility rules: Please don't be sarcastic, joke about death or suicide, suggest that others harm (or discuss specific ways of harming) themselves or others, jump to conclusions about others, post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down, harass or pressure others, use language that could offend others, post information that identifies another poster without their permission or that you know to be false, exaggerate or overgeneralize -- etc. Even if you're quoting someone else.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civilI would take special notice of the part that is written as such: Please don't...post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down.
Correcting someone's spelling is one way of putting them down.
Thank you for your examination of your glass house.

just trying to make sure that someone less understanding of these things than I would not get the opportunity to actually disagree just on the grounds of spelling.
I was trying to give friendly advice, and I realise that many bad spellers have many reasons for it *but also* need help sometimes in stuff like e.g. job applications? Legal stuff? Resumes?
I'm saying that *any* thing but particularly a complaint about someone being either a "pervert" (I know this word wasn't used) or perhaps actually ill and having a hard time, needs to have enough attention and respect given to it to get the name right.
Oh, and I believe that many people also have problems that do not allow them to let spelling errors pass. I was trying to help the world by spreading a little accuracy. I really do apologise if any dyslexics are here and I have hurt their feelings, equally those with shaky hands, etc...
but if it's ignorance I can't let it pass.

I disagree with the opinion... but I also want to give people the best chance to put *their* arguments credibly. trying to help, not mock.

Generally, I can spell with the best of them. After all my time here, I don't think I have a credibility problem.
If someone thinks I do have a problem, it's their issue, not mine.
I'm not comparing this post with other posts. Homosexuality being illegal makes no more sense than hetero being illegal.
Mentioning the two in the same post is not doing my gay friends any favors either.
There have been some folks with spelling problems on the board...I have never mentioned it or questioned their crebidiliti becauze of it.
Their're all stik good piple.
If piple want to carouze with their cow or swing with their sheep, that's their business. I personally think we shouldn't lower animals to our level. Besides, they can't spel ether.
I went to shootthesheep.moo and, while they were friendly and welcoming, I just couldn't tell the cats that their grammar was bad or the alligators that their typing was horrendous. I just enjoy shootin the sheep with all God's creatures, including you. Happy turkey(bad punctuation...hideous) day.
May all God's children with mental illness support each other.
By the way, when I got home from work yesterday and Jules, my cat, greeted me, I yelled, 'How ya doing turkey?' He put down his cigar and said if I was going to be that way, he was going to deoderize my apartment. So, after frying 5 pounds of fish for Jules and his feline friends, the original rat pack, I went to bed.
What was this post about anyway?Peice

You know what Phil.. I find normally, and this is from 9 years experience of the internet and message boards, chat rooms etc etc etc..
When someone needs to start pulling you up on your spelling, it means they are losing any argument they had a hold on, and have to stoop to making you feel small for not having perfect spelling.
Luckily some of us live in the perfect world, have had the perfect education, and are above reproach. Its us, out there, that police the internet for spelling mistakes. *nods* Honest.. I have never made a spelling mistake in my life, so I am able to pull people up on their spelling.

"but if it's ignorance(COMMA) I can't let it pass."
Substitute the word can't with won't. Can't shows an 'inability to resist' hurting others. In this case you failed to do so. You 'won't' let an opportunity to belittle someone pass you by.
You have the ability to resist, you choose not to.
You know Jesus hung with the sinners and thieves, etc. I'm sure many were bad spellers. He loved them because they were flawed. Only a person who has knowledge of 'their own' shortcomings can rise above them. The only way to rise above these things is through acceptance of others mistakes and always realizing that no one is perfect.
Make a decision to listen to the ignorant and the educated, filter out how they say things things and listen for content. The lines can become blurred between the two.
And, I request that you don't post to me anymore. K?

hi pixygoth,
its general internet etiquette to not bother people about their spelling. And I fail to see how your post was "trying to give friendly advice" by saying that the poster had reduced credibility.
And Im not really sure what you mean by "if its ingnorance i cant let it past"?
In any case, let me give you a hand with your own post as I can see that you are interested in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
-----------------------------------------------------------
you said, "just trying to make sure that someone less understanding of these things than I would not get the opportunity to actually disagree just on the grounds of spelling."
In this I would actually make it, "I am just trying to make sure that someone with less understanding of these things than me would not get the opportunity to disagree solely on the grounds of spelling."
Shall I continue?

I wnet to the gorercy sotre tdoay at 2:30 to pcruhsae a tkruey.
This was being passed around at work. You read the sentence as fast as you normally would.
It seems our brain can read just about as well as long as the first and last letter of a word are correct.I went to the grocery store today at 2:30 to purchase a turkey.

It is nice to what to help us bad spellers, but only if we ask. This is not an english class.

As long as I can understand fairly clearly the point one is making, thats all I care about. I know that there have probably been numerous times when I have mispelled something, or worse yet, left a word out... :)

The inability to spell does not necessarily imply ignorance. Of course, one might refer to a dictionary, but who really takes the time for that when posting on here? I know I don't. If it's something of importance like a resume, then I am compulsive about spell-checking. I must admit that at times I can be quite lazy about my spelling on here, but I do not consider myself to be ignorant. I also might add that spellings differ in countries. I have noticed that I am starting to pick up British spellings, which is quite amusing to my fellow Americans when I am typing emails to them!

Well thank you Dr Bob.
I think the response to my post has been a bit disproportionate. And I know Phil can spell, looking at his other posts, so i thought that he would appreciate the fix. If not, fine. Continue to spell it wrong, if it makes you feel better.
And finally, for the last time, I wasn't saying he had little credibility, just saying that some would think so.
