Hi all,
In seeing my regular doctor today, we decided to switch back from nortriptyline to mirtazapine.
The nortriptyline was not helping as much with sleep as the mirtazapine.
With nortriptyline, I just kept waking up throughout the night (thinking it was later than it was). It felt like my sleep was very light.

Will you just take a little 'sleep dose' of mirtazapine, say 7.5mg-15mg, or a higher dose for depression?

Hey Ed,
Actually, I'm taking more like 3.75mg (or less) with 37.5mg of Effexor and 300mg of lithium. I find that even doses as low as 1mg are very sedating.
At one point, I did try mirtazapine monotherapy for depression. Alone, it didn't help enough symptoms.

I'm curious as to what dosage of nortriptyline you were taking.
I know that insomnia and reduced sleep quality are challenges for you, even in the absence of nortriptyline. Why did you elect to discontinue nortriptyline and not simply add the mirtazapine to it?

I was taking a low dose of nortriptyline 10-20mg.
I did try the combination with mirtazapine, but the two left me feeling quite disconnected.
To be honest, I have quite a bit of anxiety relating to fears of cardiac issues. On the nortriptyline, it felt almost impossible to take my mind off my heart.
Effexor and mirtazapine is working. I am feeling better a week after making the switch.

Hi Link,
Personally, I find that really low doses of mirtazapine just act as a sleep aid, but I also feel tired the next morning. It's feels like a strong antihistamine sedative but without the anticholinergic dry mouth etc. Standard 'antidepressant doses' and above make me feel extremely restless and uncomfortable - I don't like it.
This is the end of the thread.
