I see my doc tomorrow and I'm thinking of talking to him about vraylar. I'm really afraid of akathesia though. A few times in patient I was injected w geodon and it was hell on earth due to extreme akathesia until I was able to beg for cogentin to reduce it.
Based on the receptors they touch was is the likely hood that because I can't tolerate geodon I won't be able to tolerate vraylar?
Thx.

I think Vraylar is more of Abilify-esque drug. Have you ever tried Abilify? Akathisia is a problem w/ cariprazine, just like w/ abilify.

sorry. my initial post was kind of...well, not all that helpful. Anyway...
...I take 30mgs/Abilify, which is the biggest pill made and usually the max daily dose. Akathisia is a problem for people with Abilify...but for me, Abilify is the only neuroleptic that didn't cause akathisia, tremor, stiff gait, etc. We're all wired differently.
I didn't mean to scare you in that 1st post, just...akathisia seems to be an issue w/ D2 partial agonists. Why? I dunno. Maybe SLS can chime in.
But, like I wrote above, that doesn't mean you'll get akathisia. One reason Abilify is such a hot seller is because its more tolerable than many of the other options (both conventional and "atypical"). If Vraylar is anything like Abilify, then it should also be more tolerable than many other options.
Plus, you could be like me...no to D2 blockers, yes to D2 partial agonists. Geodon is more tolerable than some drugs, but its still a D2 blocker.
Good luck!

Thank you!! My doctor hadn't received samples yet(?) so if I do a trial of vraylar it'll have to wait at least a month.I took Abilify for a short period of time 10 or so years ago but it was during a manicy phase where I was abusing chemicals so I don't remember too much of my experience. I think it did cause some minor restlessness but I'd still be open to trying it again. My pdoc did mention that last time. My big concern w/ Abilify is potential weight gain. Have you experienced that?
My pdoc also said vraylar is crazy expensive and probably not covered as of yet...
Appreciate the response.

I have been taking Abilify for over 10 years. I find it helpful, but it does not produce a true remission.
I started taking Vraylar 4 days ago at a dosage of 3.0 mg/day. Your doctor should call for samples, as they have been available for a few weeks. My medicare insurance company covered Vraylar.

So far, I don't like the way I feel on Vraylar. I feel somewhat "drugged" and slowed-down. I don't know if this is a startup side effect or something that will persist. I continue to take Abilify, but will begin tapering it tomorrow. Maybe the two drugs together are producing the drugged feeling. I doubt it, though. We shall see.

Vraylar and Geodon do not share the same mechanism of action. I do not think you will have a similar reaction. I'm on Vraylar 6 mg and have not had any problems and, in fact, I have had improvements in mood and cognition.
