i've posted about it many years ago, but ... like today in society, xanax is usally the common name for anxiety, it used to be valium and for a short time meprobamate (miltown)
so....i know its a relaxer but i read somewhere that benzos are more effective for treating anxiety than it, saying that meprobamate is more makes you relax, and benzos are more direct in targeting GABA.....
its an outdated drug, not many people know about it but still would there be any knowedge on it?

it came out a bit before librium. was something of a hit from day one, lol. less toxic than barbiturates in overdose. some preparations included aspirin, for headaches and muscle pain (kinda like a less toxic Fioricet).
I think Phillipa took it in the 70s, with valium in the mix. Its still produced...its a schedule IV, like the benzos.

Yes I did 450 mg one time a day thing it was. And just stopped after about a year. Before the internet one hadn't heard of withdrawal. So had none at all. Phillipa

yea it was really popular drug for about 10 years, it's related to Soma, the muscle relaxant, but meprobamate is both a nerve relaxant and muscle relaxant, but yea i read somewhere that benzo's where a bit more effective than meprobamate for treating anxiety, meprobamate was more just like a relax pill, yet could still have anxiety on it. I think it works on the spinal cord, and causes sedation, where as benzo's work directly on GABA in the brain......so you could get relaxed but still have anxiety on meprobamate.....i read alprazolam is superior for reducing panic attacks
still it was a popular drug that was effective but benzo's blew it out because of better side effects and mechanism of action

i think the chemcical name is carisoprodol, it metabolizes into miltown .... after couple hours....

Also related (a little more distantly) to Robaxin, a muscle relaxant & back remedy. I used to take meprobamate and Robaxin has some of the same effects - physically relaxing, stops tremors from other meds, lessens anxiety.
Pure Robaxin is available in Canada from the pharmacist (literally OTC), and off-the-shelf in combination with analgesics -- Robaxacet, Robax Platinum etc., probably same in US.

Yup, Soma/carisoprodol is metabolized slowly to meprobamate, which accounts for most of its effect. It's hard to get (in Canada at any rate) -- my pharmacist hadn't even heard of it.Meprobamate has disappeared from the pharmacopoea (sp?) for all practical purposes, which I think is a shame; it provides quite different sort of anxiety relief than the benzos. I believe it was dropped not so much because of side effects as addiction concerns. Ironic, because it turns out that the benzos are less quickly addicting but MUCH harder to get off of, as I know to my cost!

yea......it relaxes the muscles, it's basically a old school "relax" pill, yet benzo's seem to do a better job at eliminating anxiety, you can feel relaxed on meprobamate, but still have anxiety even with being sedated, benzo's are more direct on GABA, i read miltown works on the spinal cord, reduces pain signals, and reduces tension.

it seems to be available here in the us. Out of curiosity, I did a goodrx search on it. available in generic, more $$$ than benzos, but not crazy expensive. Do you think its being used mostly as a muscle relaxer? I mean, soma is now in schedule IV, also, so...why not use miltown?

Soma is main choice because it's chemcially carisoprodol, then after time it does turn into miltown.
Meprobamate is more on sedation, but still even people who take soma would get meprobamate in their system
it's good for relaxing, but it's not as good as benzo's for anxiety
