Yup, Soma/carisoprodol is metabolized slowly to meprobamate, which accounts for most of its effect. It's hard to get (in Canada at any rate) -- my pharmacist hadn't even heard of it.

Meprobamate has disappeared from the pharmacopoea (sp?) for all practical purposes, which I think is a shame; it provides quite different sort of anxiety relief than the benzos. I believe it was dropped not so much because of side effects as addiction concerns. Ironic, because it turns out that the benzos are less quickly addicting but MUCH harder to get off of, as I know to my cost!
