I drink. In fact I just had two vodka cranberries. Its in preparation for a huge family dinner at a Japanese restaurant.
There are times my social anxiety is so bad I want to crawl right out of my skin. A drink or two squashes that instantly. No drug compares.
Am I ashamed? Yes. But some days I simply can't cope. I never get drunk but sometimes I feel it the next day and I think what the h*ll.
I have a drink, maybe two, and suddenly I'm calm. I feel it wash over me and all is right with the world even if only for a short time.
I'm off to do battle with my social anxiety yet again. Wish me luck.

I treat both alcohol and caffeine as drugs. They can be used as psychotropic tools or for recreation. Do you feel addicted to alcohol, or do you use it only as a tool to treat your social anxiety?

I wish you luck. :-)

Yes, me too.

I'd say somewhere in between. I recently abstained from alcohol for a month just to see how I'd feel. I didn't notice any difference other than I missed my "crutch". I'm not an alcoholic but I rely on alcohol more than I'd like.

IMHO, alcohol definitely qualifies as a drug. For those who don't have a problem with it, I'm sure small doses can be beneficial.
But it can have subtle negative after-effects. I didn't believe my counselor when she said alcohol can depress your mood for up to 10 days after a single evening drinking moderately -- until I started tracking my mood & alcohol consumption -- darn it, she was right!
And a study years back showed that in "normies" who were required to take a few drinks daily their anger quotient went up markedly.

I'm drinking more than occasional small doses. Time to stop. I rarely suffer from hangovers but this past weekend I over did it Friday night and felt REALLY depressed all day Saturday.

I'm gonna cut back. It certainly couldn't hurt.
