Update on my Diet

Posted by Hello321 on February 15, 2016, at 22:35:23

I posted a few weeks ago about eliminating any "added sugar" from my Diet. Well, though my Diet has definitely gotten much healthier than it was a month ago, I've not quite met my goal just yet. But I've been reading more into how our diet affects our health, and have gotten interested in the Ketogenic Diet. And basically it is a high fat, moderate protein and very low carbohydrate diet. The idea behind it is to cause your body and brain to start feeding off ketones from fat metabolism instead of glucose from carbohydrate metabolite (if I understand it correctly). Having ones body run off fat instead of carbohydrates is supposed to lead to more efficient functioning of your body and brain in many ways. But it is also said that staying on a ketogenic diet too long can end up being bad for you, I believe by making your blood too acidic. One condition that a telegenic diet is recognized as a legit medical treatment is Epilepsy.

Anyway, I think a ketogenic diet would be easier for me to stick to than completely avoiding sugar/refined grains. I'm slowly working over to my new diet over time.

I must say I did experience something the other night that I believe to be related to my healthier diet. It might sound funny, but I was playing NBA 2K15 on my Xbox One and I'm not sure how to describe it exactly, but I noticed the movements of the players on the screen seemed smoother and more detailed. Instead of seeing what seemed like the repetitive motions I usually see, I just noticed more detail in the way they moved. It was really cool. But this only lasted maybe 15 minutes and it was too obvious to have been like a placebo effect. I hope to achieve this more often through a better diet.

Here are links to 2 videos on YouTube describing the supposed effects of a ketogenic diet. These links are to videos meant for the mobile version of youtube so I'm not sure they will work if you're on a desktop computer. But you could just type in Ketogenic Diet on YouTube and many interesting videos come up

My Idea

I'm pretty much thinking "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten". I'm wanting to make a change in my life, my health, my emotional wellbeing, etc... The past few years I've tried many medical treatments and haven't gotten anywhere with them. So, just like
How one makes a change when they realise a medication isn't working, I'm changing many more aspects about my life than just a medication. I've always figured my Diet was decently healthy and that I didn't need to change it much. My weight is fine. But these days I'm opening my mind to other ideas for a healthy diet. There are so many diets claiming to be the healthiest that contradict each other. But I'm just going with one that looks like it might just be beneficial for my situation. And part of its appeal to me is that it's quite different from my normal diet that is filled with carbohydrates. I just need to try something different. I think a lot of people need to try something different.

And yes, ones diet can affect their mental health as much, good or bad, as any psychiatric treatment.

Lol yup. I go for a good walk everyday, as long as weather allows it.

I know it's been said high fat foods are basically the devil. But lately this thought has been changing. Excess carbohydrates are now being identified as the cause of many illnesses that fats were blamed for. OF course trans fats have no place in our diet. But there seem to be pros and cons to every other kind of fat. Some having more of the pros. Some having more of the cons.

Hi, I lost about 70 lbs in 4 or 5 months after I had gained a ton of weight on Remeron. I'm glad you are trying to lose weight, but losing weight is simple math and that's it. You have a calorie alottment to work with each day based on your sex, height, weight, and activity level . Google " Mayo Clinic" calorie tool. If you put in your information this will tell you how much you need to eat to maintain your body weight. If you consume 500 fewer calories, you will lose 1 lb, if you consume 1,000 calories you will lose 2 lbs. If you only eat foods with nutrition facts and you use Myfitnesspal to track everything you eat and drink, you will lose the weight. I used Myfitnesspal and only ate Subway sandwiches, chips, and In N Out for 4 or 5 months and lost a ton of weight. Make sure that you watch places that make your food and ask how big a serving size is so that they don't give you too much. Chipotle will typically give you almost double what their nutrition facts say. Somethings at Chipotle will be exact like the tortilla because they are all the same size, but the more items you have in your burrito the more room for error there is. I hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. But my Diet is simply to get healthier. My weight is just fine. I figured I'd make a post on babble about my new diet just mainly in hopes someone might see it and start thinking of other ways, like food, to improve their condition when they're not ready getting anywhere with medications.

Brain Insulin Resistance causes Behavior Disorders

Posted by Hello321 on February 22, 2016, at 0:58:00

"Both types 1 and 2 diabetes are associated with increased risks of age-related decay in cognitive function and mood disorders, especially depression. Insulin action has been shown to regulate neuronal signaling and plasticity. Here we investigate whether brain-specific knockout of insulin receptor (NIRKO) in mice causes behavioral changes and how these are mechanistically linked. We find that NIRKO mice exhibit age-related anxiety and depressive-like behavior. This is due to altered mitochondrial function, aberrant monoamine oxidase (MAO) expression, and increased dopamine turnover in the mesolimbic system, and can be reversed by treatment with Mao inhibitors. Thus, brain insulin resistance alters dopamine turnover and induces anxiety and depressive-like behaviors. These findings demonstrate a potential molecular link between central insulin resistance and behavioral disorders."

Apparently the more sensitive ones insulin receptors, the more their body and brain health benefits. A drug known as Metformin is used to increase The body's insulin sensitivity and has been shown to actually decrease the fundamental effects of aging. Metformin is a lot like the Ketogenic Diet in pill form.
