What my pharmacist says about serotonin syndrome.

Posted by former poster on November 23, 2015, at 15:34:18

I told him I was advised by a credible source that the combination Emsam and Luvox are dangerous because of serotonin syndrome. His reply was:

"It's very rare"
What symptoms should I watch for?
"Dizziness, over-stimulation, feeling like you had too much caffeine".

I have never -not- been "dizzy, over-stimulated, feeling like I had too much caffeine" while I was on AD's. When will I know for sure if serotonin syndrome is starting? Or do I have it all the time and not know it?

I don't think this guy really knows what serotonin syndrome is.

"Dizziness, over-stimulation, feeling like you had too much caffeine".

It sounds like he is equating serotonin syndrome to some sort of antidepressant / upper overdose.

I think that chills, fever & muscle rigidity are important diagnostic symptoms.

Yeah.. It's shocking how unqualified so many of the medical field people are. Used to be people became Drs, carpenters, pharmacists because they had a calling to do so. Now its all about the mighty Euro or dollar...

i thought one time a while back when i took a bunch of 5htp with my prozac, all i rerember i did get really agitated feeling nervious, everything just went wrong, nothing like serious with life threatening but i went into a horrible state of agnitation and anxiety.........maybe that was just a mild symptom because i was taking 60mg of fluoxetine, and i had about 200mg of 5htp but it could of been just a case of coincidence imbalance

I think there may be a slight risk...you may want to run a drug-drug interaction checker. You're also on two atypicals, which...complicates thing, I think.

Wait for SLS to chime in.

How is the Emsam and the combo working for you? I imagine you've spoken to your prescribing physician. Linkage's description of serotonin syndrome is accurate.

Hope you're doing well. Please don't be miffed; we're looking out for you.

I appreciate everyone's comments and support. Thanks for looking out for me.
I haven't taken Emsam with the Luvox as of yet. I've been off of Emsam for about 2 months.
I'm thinking if I do need more AD power I might st
art adding 1/4 of a 6mg patch for 4 hrs and removing, waiting 48 hrs and try again if no problems occur, gradually working up to a full patch over time. I cant differentiate hypomania from serotonin syndrome. Overstimulation is almost an every day occurance for me on ADs. Same to me as having too much caffiene with my AD.

I've spoken to the physician about serotonin syndrome with the combo and he is concerned but must feel it is worth the risk.
