Yet another Nardil weight problem

Posted by HealthyAndHappy on June 24, 2015, at 15:29:07

Please help me. I feel like I'm losing my battle. I've been reading a lot of info on this forum, but most of it is decades old. I was hoping for some updating information on Nardil and weight loss.

I am taking:
Nardil 90mg
Lyrica 300mg
Topamax: 50mg
Nuvigil: 250mg

The combo works great! It relieves my atypical depression and social anxiety 80% percent. 95+ on a good day.

But now I am morbidly obese. I'm 6'3" and I gained over 120lbs in 6 months. I am trying Topamax, and it cuts the cravings, but it's like the drugs are making me not motivated to start dieting and exercising. Almost like I should have anxiety about my weight but I don't because of the drugs. My only motivation to lose the weight is because I struggle to do things I used to do, like walking up the stairs. I get exhausted easily and sometimes just want to give up. Plus I don't like how I look.

I have an appointment next week. Should I try Parnate or Marplan? Or should I quit the MAOIs and go on Adderall for a while? Or should I stay on the Nardil and work with my therapist?

I now have over 160lbs to lose... I almost just want to give up.

NARDIL has been my med for 30+ years. The weight is something you have to fight. Why you're on the other meds surprises me.

I fight every day eating any carbs. No sugar what so ever. ( sugar also lower the effectiveness of Nardil)

What brand of Nardil are you using. Greenstone or Gavis? I've found Gavis to be more effective than Greenstone. One I see is you're taking to much. Talk to you doc and see about lowering to 60mg / day.

Nardil is a different med. You think if 60 mg is good 90 mg has to better. My experience indicates you can have to much and it negates the AD effect

Are you having diarrhea, hypertension, imsomnia, urinary retention issues?

Bottom line is I do up to 120 mg/day when stress overtakes me. If you'll stay on a high protein diet I promise the weight and the effectiveness of Nardil will improve drastically.

I wish I could explain the weight gain but?????

Empty your house of all sweets and simple carbs as bread, crackers, peanuts, etc. You're going to wake up starving.....have sandwich meat, oatmeal, cheese, fruit, juice, etc. to quench your hunger. You know those nights happen. You're not going to be energized enough to fix anything, that's why the food you store has to be quick and no effort.

I've been there and I do manage my weight somewhat but it takes a lot of effort.

Read up about Metformin and weight gain.

Healthy liver and kidney is imperative though!

I decided to give up on Nardil. I'm currently tapering off, down to 30mg/day. Withdrawal has not been fun but I want to get off this fast. I'm really sad because it was a cure for my depression and anxiety. But the uncontrollable carb cravings were ruining me physically.

I'm going to go on adderall for a while. It will help me lose the weight quickly, and help with some of my depression symptoms like leaden paralysis and extreme lack of motivation.

After I'm physically healthy again I'm going to look into trying Parnate.

I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from trying Nardil. I was truly happy with it except for the weight gain, which I think I was predisposed to because I already have issues with binge eating.

i wouldnt do that.

There is a good chance that Metformin would fix it.

In remission you start taking it for granted and discontinue what is responsible for remission.

Some people say Nardil doesnt work anymore the second time around.

i wish you good luck with whatever you do
