I'm not considering going into one right now---I live comfortably with my (fortunately) comfortable parents, so I'm safe and comfortable, Praise God--but...
...I dunno. I was out-of-commission for a good 10 years. I'm 30 now. I'm working on a degree online, but I get the sense that this will end up being a case where I learn, my mind is sharpened, but I still won't be able to get a job. The economy has tanked and nobody wants to hire a former mental patient after a certain age, especially in respectable positions.
I have no technical skills. I have a terrible reputation around here.
Ugh. What are group homes like?

> Ugh. What are group homes like?I don't know much about group homes, but it doesn't seem like you'd really be a candidate for one. The economy is improving (slowly) and there will be more jobs. I think you can succeed!

Hi Christ,
I hear ya. I'm 31 and I do have a degree but no job. I have been able to get some (part time) teaching work, but the Ontario teaching job market is bunged up like a.........something.
Are you taking out loans for the degree? It is probably not a bad idea if you've got some financing for it.
I agree, the job market is so incredibly depressing. I want to work, I want to work hard, but I can't do a damn thing.

I'd like to work, but the shrinks around here ruined my reputation (the medical board has been involved). There's not a whole lot I can do, but hope to get a degree and move away in a couple years.......but what will I *do* to support myself? Ugh. Reality bites.

Its probably hard to generalize
For one thing I live in the UK
Anyway I had an overall positive experience of living in a "Therapeutic Community"
The social contact & tolerant (in some ways) atmosphere really helped me
I found the Staff Team very overbearing thoughI would personally be very selective about what Home you consider moving to & try & get a feel for the place

Now that I think about it...I'll stay out of one, if I can.Part of the problem is stigma for ex-patients, particularly when you've been labeled a "trouble maker." Particularly in the south, I think.
Lots of issues--social class, sexuality issues, mental illness and treatment stigma, substance abuse stigma, etc.--have combined to make me persona non grata in my area. :-(
The only reason I'm not in a state mental hospital is because of my (newly) affluent parents. Welcome to psychiatry--your "mental health" isn't as big an issue as your social standing, or the social standing of those taking care of you.
Boo! I wish I'd never gone to a shrink :-(

I hear ya. I'm gay but I have part time employment as a church organist. So, obviously I'm not out.
