I had a previous thread on polypharmacy and it got me thinking about different responses to psychiatric meds in different contexts. For example, adding wellbutrin to zoloft improved my depression and OCD but now that I'm taking it with clomipramine, is it possible that the wellbutrin is countering the beneficial effects of the Clomipramine? I've noticed some improvement in OCD but depression has been worse. When I was taking the wellbutrin/zoloft combination, my OCD was as bad as ever in spite of the alleviation of depression. Also taking lamictal at present and it seems to help with OCD. Thoughts?

Maybe you'd be better off using Ritalin or something instead of Wellbutrin? Just a random thought.

I did a trial of Ritalin in April, adding it to escitalopram, wellbutrin and aripiprazole. All it did was make me twitchy and anxious, sadly.

:-(
I was just asking because wellbutrin can mess with tca blood levels, whereas I don't think Ritalin does (?).
A low dose amphetamine? Provigil?

Makes sense. Wellbutrin was kind of the cornerstone of my ad treatment for a long time. Even though I'm curious what I'd experience without it, I'm also terrified.

First off, OCD = low serotonin in certain parts of the brain and high dopamine in other regions of the brain. Wellbutrin increases dopamine in the brain which should theoretically worsen OCD-I can't account for Wellbutrin improving OCD symptoms (what else were you taking at the time?). Antidepressants raise levels of serotonin in the brain (of course) which is why they are used to treat OCD. Ideally you want too be taking a drug that raises serotonin - an SSRI, SNRI, Clomipramine or Mirtazapine - plus a drug that lowers dopamine - an atypical antipsychotic.
As for your OCD improving on lamictal-well that's because lamictal is a glutamate antagonist and they have been shown to improve OCD symptoms.

Whenever wellbutrin has been helpful it's been alongside an SSRI(Paroxetine and sertraline), so I imagine it was an indirect improvement due to alleviation of depression.
This is the end of the thread.
