Beta-blocker, propanol

Posted by Beckett on April 21, 2014, at 22:41:38

Hi,

Does anyone have experience with propanol? I am prescribed 1-2 x daily. The tablet is 10mg.

This is prescribed for anxiety and tremor. I took some this evening, and other than a slight headache, I'm not sure I felt anything.

Any good for anxiety?

Short acting resident docs used to use it before giving a presentation. Some find it helpful for anxiety. Phillipa

Beta-blockers do a good job of treating the physical effects of anxiety, such as tremor, sweating, heart racing, etc. But as far as actually treating anxiety they are not meant to.

If you want something to treat anxiety, try a benzodiazapine, Gabitril, Lyrica or a serotonergic antidepressant.

also, 10 mg is a ridiculously low dose of propanalol.

Yes, this does nothing. I already take 600mg Lyrica. This I take in the evening to help with sleep. I could probably take it in the day, too, but who will prescribe it? My word recall is terrible, too. I feel very discouraged. Gabatril is something I read about, but there have been so many meds.

There is very little evidence to support the use of tiagabine (Gabitril) in anxiety, or other psych disorders. It's pretty much last-line.

Propranolol caused sever muscle weakness...felt like I had muscular dystophy. Walking is one of my best stress relievers and it was basically impossible after taking one pill. Never again! But that's just my story. YMMV

Inderal is prescribed off label in psychiatry for several reasons.

The first is its prescribed off label for stage fright or people who get really nervous when they have to do public speaking. Pop one right before you go onstage to make a speech before a big audience and you might appear and feel cooler, less nervous, more self assured, etc.

That use wont really apply to most of the posters on this forum because my impression is most of the people on this forum dont work or if they do work, its in jobs where they dont work making speeches.

Another off label use is akathisia

Another off label use is anxiety, particularly if a person cannot take or increase their dose of benzos.

Its not FDA approved for any psychiatry use, its a really old anti-hypertensive medication...one of the very first. I believe it came out in the fifties or the sixties. Taken regularly, as an anti-hypertensive, Inderal can CAUSE or exacerbate depression. But taken once in a while, "as needed," it has helped some people deal with situational anxiety and stress (public speeches, socializing at functions, etc.)

its prescribed off label for stage fright, thats the term I was trying to remember. Stage fright is not a psych disorder. Inderal has been proven effective for stage fright.

Just took it for a few weeks, off and on, last month. Upped the dose from 10-20-30-40mgs. It did nothing (or very very little) for my anxiety disorder. Nada.

I was given Lopressor 25mg as with thyroid disorder couldn't take Inderal. But all it did was make me tired and couldn't raise pulse rate when excercising. Phillipa

You really should be splitting that 600 mg Lyrica dose-300mg in the morning and 300 mg at night.

Why do you feel discouraged? What have you been on?

Please pardon me--I did not see some of these posts until just now. Not sure why I didn't receive notifications.

I was prescribed propanol for fine tremor (lithium we think), but I had hoped it would help with the physical effects of social anxiety because interacting with people not within the safe zone is like a performance. Well, was I wrong. Even at a higher dose. It does help with the tremor which is slight but annoying.

For Eric,

I really should split the Lyrica dosage as you have been recommending. I am so worried that I will be unable to sleep that I just keep taking it in the evening. I experience the phenomena of lethargy early/throughout the day and a little wired at bedtime. I only have Sonata for sleep which I know is fairly weak and benign. However the Lyrica is very often enough. However I am feeling very low and sluggish anyways and sleep heavily.

If you split the Lyrica dose and find you can't go to sleep I would add Gabitril 12 mg.

I take propranolol 20-40 mg prn. What I find is that although it doesn't reduce my anxiety directly, it seems to break the vicious circle leading to a panic attack -- OMG, I'm shaking & my heart is pounding, so I must be having an anxiety attack, so now I'll feel anxious about my anxiety.... It helps but only in a small way.

Clonidine .1 mg (careful of the name!) is much more powerful and effective but makes me drowsy & muddle-headed. Both can cause low blood pressure if over-used - on 120 mg propranolol XR I was having trouble negotiating stairs due to balance problems.
