Anyone use Zoloft or SSRIS for pain?

Posted by gadchik on November 22, 2013, at 12:19:36

I have had neck pain/shoulder tension on and off for years. It has gotten bad lately. I wake in the middle of night in pain sometimes. I tried taking 12.5mg zoloft, and the pain/tension went away. But it comes back next day, if I dont take another. Ive done this a few times to be sure its the zoloft. I never had neck pain when I was on zoloft fulltime. Wonder why it helps? Ive tried heating pad, massage, tylenol, advil, none works. I increased klonopin a few times and that works, but I dont want to go down that road.

never heard of that...

that's pretty cool though. Can you tolerate zoloft all the time, maybe at a higher dose? What about cymbalta or a tca?

I really dont want to take zoloft all the time, but I cant stand the tension I get. I called a pharmacist and he said the ssris do help some with pain. He stated that some people stop getting the pain relief tho once their bodies have become accustomed to the extra serotonin. I dont know if its a long term solution. He did mention that cymbalta is the one most people use for pain. I gained weight b4 on zoloft(but was also taking remeron),zoloft also messes with my stomach.

Cymbalta evidently helped with pain for me when on it. Took 60mg and was lifting weights, walking 5 miles on beach daily as lived there then. And then rode bike. When discontinued that is when I noticed the back pain. Could have been coincidental? Will never know. But no weight gain. Phillipa

I wonder if serotonin calms the nerves where I'm having pain?

No neck pain or shoulder tension since starting 12.5mg Zoloft! I was having neck spasms & awaking at night in pain, now I'm pain free. Think this wil last?

Even at 12.5mg? Have you tried taking it for a few weeks to see how you do?

I've heard of doctors prescribing SSRIs for pain in pts who can't tolerate the side effects of TCAs. The overall evidence base isn't strong but if it works for you that's the only thing that really matters.

I expected it to upset my stomach, but at 12.5mg, its not doing that, and I dont have side effects, like feeling spacey or revved up. Helping me with sleep too. I dont know why its working, but I will stick with it, since the dose is so small. A pharmacist told me that the ssris can work for pain, tho not used by many for that purpose

Thanks, chronic pain is the pitts. It would be another way to fall back into the "woe is me" trap...

Who knows, this 12.5mg of Zoloft might help your anxiety too. That would be quite something.

It does help my anxiety! I decided never to go above .5mg a day on my klonopin & these 2 meds work very well together for me. I used to take 25mg Zoloft daily, so it's worked for me b4. I even tried a 1/2 a pill b4 a dental appt once, to see if it could work like a benzo, dental stuff causes panic attacks for me. Well, I laid back in the chair & relaxed just as if I'd had a benzo! Placebo? I don't know!

The only thing that really matters is that it worked and didn't cause any nasty side effects. Although 50mg is the common starting dose, some people are much more sensitive to SSRIs than others. Even very low doses are known to affect a large proportion of serotonin transporters so you could be onto something good here.
