It used to be that valium got that bad rap...cuz everybody was on valium for a minute there. Then Xanax got a bad rap. Now everybody on benzos is usually on klonopin, so klonopin gets a bad rap.Klonopin is tricky. It can cause depression. It can be tough to taper. I think it has more drug-drug interactions that other benzos. For whatever reason, some docs keep the wrong patients on it for too long, at excessively high doses, and then don't do skillful tapers.
I think, ideally, more people would be on valium. Its easier to taper, and the added sedation can minimize the need for sleep meds. Unfortunately...its already got a bad rap as a Mother's Little Helper.

Around here, klonopin is the benzo that's prescribed the most. For me, its the only med that can make me feel sane, stable. No depression or weight gain. However, the internet always makes me want to taper off,lots of horror stories.

Ativan does not seem to get a bad rap ..yet requires more daily dosings...don't get it?

Ativan was what they kept giving me in the er for panic. I was even given ativan iv and sent home with the pills. Several times.

Back when I was tapering lorazepam (because of tolerance and inter-dose withdrawal), I'd reached the point after two months where I didn't see how I could taper any more. Because of its short half-life, the withdrawal symptoms were awful each time I cut the dose. I'd only be able to sleep two hours a night, and I'd pace back and forth most of the day. I'd been trying for weeks to get a prescription for Valium, but no doctor would give it to me. Finally, thank God, I got some Valium and did a crossover to it. It took me another two months to finish my benzo taper, and it was far from pleasant, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it had been on lorazepam.

That's right, Ativan is not easy to taper.
