Prednisone - how long till adrenals bounce back?

Posted by jono_in_adelaide on July 19, 2013, at 6:14:12

I know this isn't a psychopharmacology question, but there are some smart people here.

I recently took a course of prednisolone for asthma, 60mg on day 1, 40mg a day for 2 days, 20mg a day for 2 days, then 10mg per day for 4 days.

How long are my adrenals likely to be under par after this, I had assumed that after such a short course, they would bounce back within a week or two, but maybe not? (I'm currently using a budesonide inhaler for prevention of asthma, and an albuterol inhaler for acute attacks. I'm 42 and never had it in my life until 3 weeks ago, no idea where it came from

Asthma? Jono a lot of people here in real life and old friends on facebook seem to all of a sudden gotten asthma also? Makes me wonder if something is in the air that shouldn't be there. But I wouldn't think this would effect your adrenals. Phillipa

I once had asthma come out of nowhere.

How long have you been on Nardil?

8 weeks.

The Nardil has brought such a change to my life, I'm not stopping it under any circumstances.

The Pulmicort inhaler is giving 100% control of the asthma, so I'll use that for a couple of months then try stopping it (it has been a really bad year for allergies/hayfever in Darwin this year, and there is a family history of atopic allergies, my sister and her kids have asthma and eczema and hayfever, and I have suffered hayfever in the past

That's wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

Thanks Scott :)

Its pretty damned cool to feel normal again after all these years!

Its only now that I am feeling normal that I realise I had forgotten what normal felt like

This is very true.

I have a tendency to become overly optimistic and overestimate the degree of improvement treatment produces. So, as I get better and better, I realize just how sick I was and how much further I have to go to achieve remission. The last time I felt normal was in 2001. I had just begun taking Nardil and employed one night total sleep deprivation. The next morning, I experienced 100% remission. This state of normalcy lasted for only a few hours, but it is burned deeply into my mind.

You know, they should do a study to see if there is an association between sleep-deprivation responders and response to ketamine.

There should be no persistent effects on adrenal function after such as short course. Effects should last only a few days after stopping prednisone.

No, of course I was not suggesting that. Just making connections (or not).
