replacement for Seroquel ONLY for sleep?

Posted by LAURAH952 on June 25, 2013, at 10:19:13

Hi everyone,

As my daughter (14 now) tapers off Seroquel (50mg now), I am looking for something to help her sleep. Her insomnia can't be helping her depression/suicidal ideation. (which has significantly decreased since starting on Zoloft(100mg) 2 months ago)

I couldn't get any help from her pdoc over the phone. I will have to wait until she sees her new pdoc. (yes, that's part of the reason for a new pdoc)

Thank you!
Laura

Some people take Remeron in dosages of 7.5 - 15.0 mg given at night. Others use amitriptyline. Personally, I use Ativan intermittently. If I were to need a sleep aid every night, I would probably take Seroquel 25 mg. I understand that you wish to be rid of Seroquel entirely, but might not 12.5 - 25.0 mg be useful? As you taper Seroquel, take note of the degree of residual daytime sedation that occurs. If it disappears at a lower dosage, perhaps you can simply stay there.

Just a thought.

Since klonopin works well for you. Since klonopin is given for seizures in very high doses of 20mg a day. Would a very low dose of klonopin be an option? Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa,

I'll ask about that.

That's not a bad idea.

Hi Scott,

My daughter is already having trouble sleeping at 50mg Seroquel, so we'll see how that progresses as we taper. (She may not even like how she feels on a lower dose of Seroquel, and may be sleeping better as she gets out and does more during the day, especially now that it's summer)

Thanks for the other ideas. So, Remeron can be used solely for insomnia?

A lot of people like Trazodone as a sleep aid. Trazodone would knock me out for a good seven hours every night, but then I'd feel groggy for much of the day. I slept nine hours a night on Remeron, but I'd feel groggy all day and it caused me to feel hungry almost constantly. I gained twenty pounds during the six months that I took it. As I mentioned in my other post to you, I just started taking the supplement d-Limonene and have been sleeping very well on it. A deep sleep with no grogginess in the morning. It's only been a few days, so I hope this keeps up.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I must not have seen your post yet. d-Limoene.. sounds like something I'm going to look into!

Trazodone doesn't have me feeling groggy the next day, but I've been on it (prn) for a good few years now. Then again I'm talking about my 100lb. 14 yo daughter, so a supplement sounds much better to me!

Thanks,
Laura

Gabapentin can help, depending on how stubborn the insomnia is. Since no one has mentioned it, there it is.

Many people use remeron with success. Personally, as a person dependent on benzodiazepines, I would hesitate to introduce them unless the situation really warrants it. Good luck!

Hi,

I'm sorry - I must be confusing everyone. I started writing about my daughter suffering from MDD w/ possible bi-polar disorder and insomnia. She's on Zoloft and Seroquel.

I then started research for my own conditions. I suffer from panic attacks, depression (Bi-polar II), insomnia, and idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. I'm on Klonopin, Cymbalta, Tegretol, Trazadone, and Lyrica.

(Thanks - I've been on Gabapentin for the neuropathy, but switched to Lyrica - it works better for me, and with the above meds, I can now sleep)

HTH some - Thanks to all!
Laura

Why is she coming off the seroquel? Is it because of weight gain? If that is the case, maybe perphenazine? Its an antipsychotic with out weight gain, but makes you tired for about 8 hours.

Isnt she starting mirtazapine? That will help her sleep, thats for sure.

Short term, until she starts mirtazapine a benzodiazepine of z drug would probably help

Hi,

She's coming off Seroquel as we only intended it to be a temporary medication for MDD while in the hospital. Another reason for this is due to the fatigue, and "zeroed-out" feeling she experiences during the day.

She remains on 50mg, along with Zoloft 100mg with the intent to completely taper off the Seroquel very slowly. If she experiences any mood swings while tapering off, I think the 50mg might be used longer term. I didn't like the med for a child, but it seems to be helping. Now I just need something to help her sleep for more than 5 hours a night.

She's a thin girl, who actually had no appetite when on higher doses of Seroquel - strange how that works...

Thanks,
Laura

Tapering off seroquel. Ok. I've done that. These helped....

Lunesta.
Lemon Balm.
Skullcap.
Benadryl.

I usually rotated them or combined 2 or 3, not taken on a regular schedule, as needed.

Something else that should help with both the depression and the sleep, and maybe a lot, and fine to combine with zoloft, is Rhodiola Rosea. It is tricky at first....low doses too stimulating, high doses more calminig, find the right window, a few days of worsened symptoms in the beginning. This herb is an unsung hero of planet earth and has the capability of dealing with a myriad of problems including psychiatric and sleep.

Thanks for all this great information. I will bring all of these ideas to my daughter's new pdoc. I really appreciate it!!!

I had the best sleep when I was on Saphris. It also had mood stabilizing properties like Seroquel. herpills
