Took too much Levothyroxine

Posted by maiseycat on June 6, 2013, at 14:02:25

I take Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. I only take 12.5 mcg (half of a 25 mcg pill). I had started out on a whole pill initially but began to show signs of hyperthyroidism - that dose was too much for me.

Last night, I couldn't remember if I'd taken my levo or not. I couldn't sleep and sometimes if I don't take my levo I have problems sleeping so I assumed I had forgotten it and took it. I began to feel strangely. Heartbeat was quickenend and I just felt jittery. So I must HAVE taken the levo earlier and got double my normal dose when I took it again. I just want to know if this can cause a disruption in my thyroid levels long-term. I know levo levels can need to be adjusted from time to time, but I've been on this dose ever since I started a few years ago. I do get it tested about every 3 months. It has gone up and down in the past several months (which I didn't think could happen) but my dose hasn't needed to be adjusted. I also got a new doctor recently and she isn't planning to do labs on me for another year. I guess it's because I've had trouble with potassium and so have had to go in for a lot of labs lately to make sure that was worked out. They went ahead and did my thyroid along with that for some reason so I guess she thinks since I've done all of this thyroid testing lately that is enough to assure that it won't change within a year's time. IDK I don't like that since my old doctor always wanted it done at least a few times a year. I guess what I want to know is will messing up on my levo dosage from time to time mess up my thyroid levels? It's just hard because I have depression + PCOS so I also take anti-depressants, and Elavil to help me sleep. The levo has gotten pushed to right before bedtime, and sometimes I can get too groggy to remember if I've taken it or not. I am concerned about doing that again because of the symptoms I had - heartbeat changes, eyelid fluttering, agitation. I wouldn't think it could do that, being on such a low dose.

Hello, I always ask my pharmacist drug related questions, and he knows more than my doctor. I hope someone here can help you as well.

Levothyroxin as in generic for synthroid? If dosing is the same. That is a low dose. But why at night? Usually it's an hour or half hour before breakfast?. I know some take it at night as it doesn't bother them. But first do you have hasimotos as I do as know the levels can fluctuate. And new doses Prescribed higher or lower depending on the levels. Once levels are stable once a year is okay. But since I have an endo he does check the whole panel about every six months. But I would think that one dose just needs time to wear off. But calling the pharmacist is a great idea. Then you will know for sure or the doc. Phillipa

Yes, generic Synthroid. I take it at night because I hate waiting a half hour to eat and drink. Night is the only time I have an empty stomach. Nope, no Hashimotos. Yes, my only fear is my body adjusting to that higher dose, then my regular dose may not be enough. But, I don't think
this once will make a difference. If it does, I should be able to notice it by feeling crappy during the day when I return to my 1/2 pill. I've forgotten to take it entirely before and it really does make a difference in how I feel the next day.

I may go back to taking it in the am. It's the only medicine I really have a hard time remembering because my bedtime routine is... I don't really have one. I'm always doing a million different things at night because I'm a night owl unfortunately so it's when I like to get things done.

I'm also a night owl. Don't take mine with bed meds. But I wake at around 5 bathroom so take it then and go back to sleep. Phillipa

I find it hard to beleive that one would feel any subjective effect from a single dose of 12.5mcg of thyroxine, given its uber long half life and average dose of 100-150mcg/day

I'd say it might just have been coincidence

of course, anything is possible, and I might be talking out of my own a*se

Can't you get a pill counter at a drug store. I don't know exactly what they call them, but my husband has one. He puts all his pills for the week in little boxes, then knows whether he took them or not.

My mom takes Levoxyl too and always gets up early to take hers. She's been on it for many years.
when she was in the hospital a couple years ago they put her dose up to 100 mcg. from 75! and she ended up getting atrial fibrillation, which in turn gave her a small stroke!

Nothing to fool around with these drugs. Her primary physician told her they never should have raised her thyroid med. that much after years on 75 mcg. She is 91 years old!
