I take Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. I only take 12.5 mcg (half of a 25 mcg pill). I had started out on a whole pill initially but began to show signs of hyperthyroidism - that dose was too much for me.
Last night, I couldn't remember if I'd taken my levo or not. I couldn't sleep and sometimes if I don't take my levo I have problems sleeping so I assumed I had forgotten it and took it. I began to feel strangely. Heartbeat was quickenend and I just felt jittery. So I must HAVE taken the levo earlier and got double my normal dose when I took it again. I just want to know if this can cause a disruption in my thyroid levels long-term. I know levo levels can need to be adjusted from time to time, but I've been on this dose ever since I started a few years ago. I do get it tested about every 3 months. It has gone up and down in the past several months (which I didn't think could happen) but my dose hasn't needed to be adjusted. I also got a new doctor recently and she isn't planning to do labs on me for another year. I guess it's because I've had trouble with potassium and so have had to go in for a lot of labs lately to make sure that was worked out. They went ahead and did my thyroid along with that for some reason so I guess she thinks since I've done all of this thyroid testing lately that is enough to assure that it won't change within a year's time. IDK I don't like that since my old doctor always wanted it done at least a few times a year. I guess what I want to know is will messing up on my levo dosage from time to time mess up my thyroid levels? It's just hard because I have depression + PCOS so I also take anti-depressants, and Elavil to help me sleep. The levo has gotten pushed to right before bedtime, and sometimes I can get too groggy to remember if I've taken it or not. I am concerned about doing that again because of the symptoms I had - heartbeat changes, eyelid fluttering, agitation. I wouldn't think it could do that, being on such a low dose.
