Flupirtine as an antiglutamergenic AD??

Posted by rovers95 on May 13, 2013, at 15:06:40

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any experience in using the drug Flupirtine and what effect (if any) it had on their mood?

The drug seems to have some anti-glutamergenic action and thus may indirectly antagonise NMDA receptors. Leading docs in Fibromylagia/CFS seem to think that something causing (or resulting from) these illnesses is stimulating the NMDA receptor and this may explain why the drug appears to have positive effects on FM pain and the mood of said subjects?

Anyway I have managed to obtain some and I am keen to try for my concurrent depression/anxiety/CFS, so will report back when I am up and running.

Cheers

Rover

So I am starting at 2 x 100mg, each time I have taken this dose I have very quickly felt more relaxed, less anxious. Could be placebo and the muscle relaxant properties, but we will see over the next week or so!

Day 4 - seems promising!

So I'm having bursts of improved mood and enhanced libido, feelings that remind me of the summer of 2007 (I think) after I had been on riluzole.

However, I have also reverted back to my low carb diet....but something is making me feel better!

Cheers

Very good to hear. Any effect on energy level? (I suppose increased libido answers affirmatively.)

Excellent news. Do be careful though. The European Medicines Agency is currently conducting a review to decide whether flupirtine will be withdrawn from the market. At the moment, it is sold in Germany and various Eastern European countries. Numerous reports of liver damage and liver failure have led to this review.

The epilepsy medication retigabine appears to have the same mechanism of action, and is not at risk of being withdrawn.
