Been reading the archives on Metformin and seems to help with some weight loss. A bit?
I'm not working, sedentary, and over the last 8-10 years gained 50 pounds. Thank you Zyprexa and Seroquel.
I'm trying to pack up stuff for a move and I have 0 energy. It's either Metformin or drop Seroquel, I can't live like this and the heavier I get and the depression from it, it just makes the whole exercise thing seem like a joke.
I'm not frustrated I'm pissed off.

My doc puzzles me. I asked him about how Seroquel works in the brain last week and I wasn't overly thrilled with his convoluted answer.
He just called back on my metformin inquiry and needs some time to look into it. I understand taking a look at my chart but hasn't he had this question before?
I feel like I'm talking to myself. I'm used to it.

Conclusions: Lifestyle intervention and metformin alone and in combination demonstrated efficacy for antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Lifestyle intervention plus metformin showed the best effect on weight loss. **Metformin alone was more effective in weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity than lifestyle intervention alone.**

My brother is on it but I don't think I'll ask him for his script. I don't buy drugs online. I think my doc will write it.

My doc called, 500 mg Metformin twice a day. It's a start. It's hope. That's all I want to kick this into gear.

The first doc that put me on AP's and started seeing weight gain should have put me on it then. It's best at stopping further weight gain.. OK, enough of this.

I asked Phil because I am used to seeing Metformin used in the treatment of diabetes. I did not know it had another use.

Good luck with the Metformin. It not only may help control your weight but also it should help prevent diabetes from developing. Seroquel elevates prolactin (via D2 antagonism) and elevated prolactin causes insulin resistance. This insulin resistance will cause weight gain and, given enough time, lead to diabetes. The ideal dose of Metformin for you may be 2000mg/day or so, in the extended release form ideally. It might cause your stomach to feel upset at first, give this time to go away. Follow up with an insulin resistance test (not a glucose tolerance test) to make sure this issue has been dealt with.

Hey Andy! I can't believe it, I was just showing my partner, some of your old posts. She is a psychologist and was telling me about her patient who had suffered greatly throughout her life, how she finally found happiness recently, only to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Life can be so cruel. I replied, remember that guy who saved my life (you) it was the same story. She knows how upset I get when I think about what happened to you. I read her one of your posts in which you said how well you were, and feeling blessed. You also enthusiastically remarked "who knows what the future might bring". As I read those words a tear rolled down my cheek.
"He finally found happiness, I said, only to fall victim to cancer".
I looked at your long list of posts intending to read her the ones which had influenced me and which had ultimately saved me. Then I see one dated April 2013...? I re-read it three times! No way I thought, it can't be? I honestly thought after our last telephone conversation when you informed of your pending bone marrow transplant, that I thought you had lost your battle. Remember I sent you that book 'The Patient From Hell'? I refrained from calling as I didn't want to upset whoever might pick up!
This has truly made my day. A fantastic surprise to know you are still with us my friend. :)))
Take care
Your grateful friend,
Shaun

Shaun,
So good to hear from you! Still have my email address? It is the same. Thanks you so much for your kind and generous thoughts.
I still have cancer, but I'm in a nice long remission and am currently enjoying excellent health (soccer and all). Funny thing, haven't had any issues with depression or used any medication for many years. I'm still gaining perspective on why I am happy and so stress free now. Needless to say, I feel blessed. But what I want to say here is that cancer (or any serious health condition) does not mean the end to happiness. I base this not only on my ongoing cancer experience but also my father's and mother's. Prepare to be amazed.
Best Wishes
Andrew
