Psychiatric review - second thoughts

Posted by jono_in_adelaide on March 6, 2013, at 16:53:09

I saw my GP yesterday, and we went through the list of suggestions from the consultant shrink I saw

They were more positivwe than I thought they would be at the appointment.

The most interesting option was drop Zoloft from my regimen, and replace it with mirtazapine (so my regimen would be ereboxetine, mirtazapine and alprazolam)

I have never felt that any of the SSRI's have done much of anything for me, so this migt be a positive step.

The other option, which she listed as a 2nd line choice, would be drop the reboxetine and sertaline and replace both with nardil.

Anyway, some food for thought.

Also, she didnt recomend giving up benzos as her attitude in the session said she would, though she listed changing from alprazolam to diazepam as an option.

I hope you keep us informed.

The whole "new Nardil" thing has me intrigued. Although I am not sure, maybe in Oz you can get the "old Nardil" ?

I'm guessing demand for Nardil here would be too small to justify making it localy, so we'd be getting either British or American "new" Nardil.

It isnt sold by Pfizer here, its sold by a small company that deals with old but essential low volume drugs.

To be honest, i think the new and the old nardil would be equaly effective my self, and given the new nardil is my only option, I'll have no optionbut to work with it

I agree since now they are here covered by insurance as deemed safter than antipschotics. I took ativan at one time. But have spent the most years on valium. I think the long half life is good for dosing. Phillipa

I like the way this doctor thinks.

Jono, I vote for mirtazapine...sim;ly b/c no washout period is needed. Can't hurt to try it, and you can always switch back to your current regimen without having to go through yet another washout. And I bet once you start mirtazapine you won't even need the alprazolam. So give it a try! It can't hurt and it might really help and you can go back to what you're on now with ease. I'd definitely try it before trying Nardil. Nardil is a great drug, but, trust me, washouts seriously suck big time.

I'm thinking that I'll try swapping the Zoloft for Remeron, because its an easy swap to make, and there is a decent rational behind it.

If that fails, i think I'll give Nardil a whirl
