hypothyroid; what's the story?

Posted by johnLA on January 15, 2013, at 0:30:13

hi all-

i looked in to the old posts about hypothyroidism/depression, but i am still curious about what current babblers have to say about it...

i was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

my questions are these;

1. anyone on thyroid meds to deal with it and has it helped your depression in any way? ie energy, mood, anhedonia, the usual suspects, etc

2. if you are on thyroid meds, any nasty side effects?

thanks for any replies.

john

I took liothyronine/T3 in an attempt to relieve my depression although I had normal thyroid levels. T3 was used as an augmentor to ADs but I had no luck with it. No side effects IIRC.

John when I was diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis this is when my anxiety hit all time levels and then depression. I later learned that as the thyroid burns itself out it's levels flutuate from high to low. When first went on synthroid it was the lowest does 25mcg. In about l0 days immediately felt better and cut down on benzo use. Was working then. Fast forward thyroid recently tested by endo and TSH is less thatn l. Docs like the thyroid between l-2. In all honestly I feel horrible on the synthroid. But have no way to prove that it's synthroid and not just me. As the endo says freeT3 & free T4 are all perfect. Seems the thyroid controls so much of the body. And how you feel. Phillipa

Even though my thyroid levels were normal, my doctor allowed me to try thyroid medication, and also low-dose cortisone for adrenal fatigue. I had many of the symptoms of both ailments. These treatments turned out to be a blind alley for me. The thyroid medication made my heart race wildly, even at a very low dose.

But since your test indicated hypothyroidism, you might benefit tremendously from medication. Mary Shomon runs a website devoted to hypothyroidism -- http://thyroid.about.com/
And she's written a book, Living Well with Hypothyroidism, that anyone with hypothyroidism should read. You'll probably be prescribed Synthroid (T4). Not everyone responds well to this. Some people need to take T3 as well. Shomon writes a lot about this. Good luck.

thnx for the info guys :) (nm)

I saw her on PBS not long ago promoting an exercise program called the T-Tapp Workout.

I had hypothyroid symptoms, my tests showed borderline hypothyroidism. I started on 25 mcg which helped a lot, but wore off once my thyroid adjusted. My endo raised the dose up to 62.5 of T3 which is a decent amount. Right now my thyroid is almost completely shut down.

If you have atypical depression with low energy, etc then it may help a lot. It helped a ton with my low energy and concentration. My primary care doc suggested Armour thyroid which is a mix of T4/T3. Most primary care docs and endos don't diagnose it right.

I have this book too, you should definitely get it if you have thyroid issues. It goes very in-depth.

Stop the Thyroid Madness by Janie Bowthorpe is another very good one.
