Over the years i have noticed that tricyclics are tried or being used more than mainstream or pdocs offices. I know they are not preferred because of their side effects. And i think studies measure them with about the same success rate as the new & cleaner drugs that followed prozac and celexa.
Being that many of the people on this board are more treatment resistent, does this class tend to give our "species" a little more of the drugs value? Or is it because we end up trying more possibilities than most?

Maybe on here but not the meds I see being used in real life. They have a lot more side effects and cause horrible weight gain. Also can be overdosed on and I've seen patients before SSRI's blow up like a balloon on those meds. I'd rather be depressed or anxious than take them. This is just me. Phillipa

tricyclics where popular vary in the 1970's and 80's then prozac came on the scene, changed the history of the antidepressants. They still are used but their used after SSRIs are not helping and then after the tricylics are ineffective they used MAO's...some docs will just go straight for parnate....no tricyclics after SSRI NRI have failed.
there's a couple people here who do take them....but parnate is used alot here on babble...

The more severely depressed you are, the more likely a tricyclic is to work...... in minor neurotic depression, they arnt very usefull (no drug realy is0 but in server melancholic, they are still the gold standard

TCA's can be fatal in overdose, so they never would prescribe them for me. They also can cause weight gain as bad as the AAPs

Tricyclics cover a greater swath of the neurotransmitter spectrum, so they're more likely to help with your problem.

TCAs are probably more popular w/ pdocs because more minor cases are handled by family docs or just don't get treatment (at least not chemical treatment).
Also, pdocs are specialists, so they seem more likely to use older and off label drugs than a family doc. And TCAs can handle pain, headaches, ADD/ADHD (for some people...), sleep, etc., so they're probably still a go-to class for a lot of patients.

Also, the more gental tricyclics 9eg nortriptyline) dont have particularlt nasty side effects, when i used nortriptyline i found it effective and easy to tolorate

Personally I've found tricyclics easier to tolerate and more effective than SSRIs, but then I really don't get along with serotonergic drugs in general.
