Thanks Jono what I don't get is the recomendation for TCA's after age 60. As from what I have read tricyclics can cause cardiac arrythmias? So why them? Phillipa

Because controlled studies have showen that the older one is, the more likely ones depression will respond to a tricyclic.
That recomendation was only for endrogenous/melancholic depression - indeed, melacnholic depression responds better to NARI's at any age than it does to SSRI's

Between the article and your experience, it seems that in Australia GPs really do a lot of psychiatry work....that article would definitely be a great informative guide for them.
Thanks for posting.

That is so interesting, I'd never heard before that TCAs tend to obtain a better response the older one is. It's actually surprising; I would have thought the opposite.Phillipa: as long as you've checked out OK with your medical doc and have no history of heart disease, the TCAs should be perfectly safe to take, given that you don't take anything that might possibly interact with them, like certain anithypertensives and, obviously MAOIs.

They di kat, but a lot of thm have been taken in by the drug company ads that SSRI's cure all - the idea that you might need an NARI or an SSRI plus an NARI doesnt seem to occur to a lot of them.
The treatment alogorrthum seems to be SSIR - Mirtazapine - admit failiure
