clomipramine vs imipramine: sedative effects

Posted by schleprock on August 27, 2012, at 17:44:18

Is imipramine less sedative than clomipramine? I think I've heard that it's milder in side affects. I'm on day 4 of an attempt to cross taper 150mg of Nortriptyline w/ 25mg of clomipramine and was extremely drowsy (and anxious) the entire day so far. I just don't think this is going to work. (Can't imagine what 50mg will be like, let alone an equivelant dose to my nortriptyline.) If impramine has similar benefits, but less of the sedation, I might think about giving it a try. (I need something for anxiety\depression, not OCD)

Better yet would be any suggestions about adding a slight serotonon boost to my current dosage of nortriptyline (preferably not involving an SSRI, and certainly not a complete switch to one.)

I think clomipramine might be a bit more sedating, however, this should pass off within a week or two.

Why are you changing from nortriptyline to clomipramine?

The nortriptyline doesn't seem to be working for my current symptoms of severe depression. I thoight that switching to something in the same class that has a stronger affect on serotonin would be easy to do.

It might pay to try nortriptyline plus sertraline or another SSRI first, you'd be getting the dual reuptake inhibition without the side effects of clomipramine.

Clomipramine is however, a more potent 5HT2 blocker than nortriptyline, so thats another string to its bow. If you persevere, the drowsiness should pass within a couple of weeks

Imipramine can be very activating. You may have been anxious because of the changeover in drugs. If the anxiety is from the Clomipramine it goes away fairly quickly.

Buspirone functions as a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. That could give your nortryptyline a boost.
