I have been on parnate for 2-1/2 years and have had recurrences of depression, but not so bad as the last month. I am now unable to get out of bed except to work and the suicidal thoughts are becoming intrusive and frightening. In the past when this happened, I knocked myself out with haldol and ativan, but the haldol caused akathesia the next day which made it hard to work.
Years ago I had intrusive suicidal thoughts and panic attacks and took risperdal, which worked almost immediately. I took it for a month and gained 12 pounds. I am now wondering if I could take it as a prn, once a week or something when I feel I am losing control. I left a message for my p-doc and am still waiting to hear.
But does anyone know if risperadal is contra-indicated with parnate?

I don't see any reason why it would not be a good combination. It doesnt effect anything that is related to MAOI treatments. Give it a try.

I googled it and found a case study using an unnamed MAOI plus risperidone for what was termed "an agitated depression crisis." Unfortunately, there wasn't any text available for free. I'm no shrink, but it seems that antipsychotics were (and are) commonly used with stimulating AD drugs to counter agitation.

The AAPs are serotonin receptor antagonists. Pretty sure you can mix them with MAOIs since they dont raise serotonin like an SSRI would.
also, for a quick fix you can try benadryl for the akathisia. Or ask your doc about cogentin or artane.
You could add metformin to the risperdal and it might help with weight gain. wellbutrin and NRIs get some use for helping with weight gain also.
bounce these ideas off your doc and see what they think.

Just an update. My p-doc called and said risperodone was okay with parnate, but questioned why I wanted to use it given the problems it caused with weight gain. He suggested I give haldol another try and use benadryl for akathesia. But he wrote me a scrip. I haven't used it yet. Am feeling a little better today and don't want to try it unless things are getting out of control.
I gained so much weight on AAPs in the past that I could hardly walk due to the weight on my knees. I have since lost 50 pounds and want to keep it off.

Ummm...haldol? I had to take that in a "stop going batsh!t" cocktail in a mental hospital. They also gave me depakote, ativan, and benadryl. It scrambled my brain. Instantly. I know it was the Haldol, because the next day they switched me out to an atypical plus depakote. No brain scrambling. Of course, by then I guess I was sufficiently docile.
I'd take the Risperdal.

I have only taken it prn - just like once a month or so. It knocks me out in combo with ativan, which is good, what I want -- to sleep for 12 hours or more. But the next day, I have akathesia and am so jittery, I can't project my voice properly and have a hard time teaching.
